The Don has a sick sense – he sees red people. This poem, Commie Chameleon, is a satirical take on the 1980’s hit song, Karma Chameleon, by Culture Club…
Commie Chameleon
The king Don’ed his robe
There every wear
There every wear
Commie, commie, commie, commie, commie
Chameleon
Red goaled
And green
Red goaled
And green
Scene every wear
Commie, commie, commie, commie, commie
Chameleon
Soully unseen
Buy those Don’ing
Only red
Only goaled
Only green
Awe at the sum time
Hearts beaten
Buy the drum
Of that culture club
Amen without conviction
Ah men, who doesn’t know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go, you come and go
Commie, commie, commie, commie, commie
Chameleon
Weather ante commie king of 80’s
[or post 45’s for that madder]
His vice getting the nod and boot
Or his boy George
Loving would be
Easy if
Your colors
Whir like
My dream
Every day is like survival
You’re my lover knot
My rival
Every day is like survival
You’re my lover knot
My rival
Easy if
Your colors
Whir like
My dream
Red goaled
And green
Red goaled
And green
Commie, commie, commie, commie, commie
Chameleon
Red goaled
And green
Red goaled
And green
“Karma Chameleon” is one of several Culture Club songs inspired by the intra-band romance between singer Boy George and drummer Jon Moss who secretly dated each other during the UK band’s ’80s heyday. Boy George told Rolling Stone: “Now people can understand the songs better. They were written about my relationship with Jon, and they were also written about being a gay man in a homophobic world.” He added: “I was selling this big lie.” My poetic satirical take on this song upends the power dynamic by portraying Republican presidents weaponizing “red scare” tactics in selling this big lie.
