Has it ever occurred to you
That your life’s work is but
Macaroni art
Only then realizing
That it is covering God’s refrigerator
And how great that is
This poem touches upon a number of themes: humility, self-confidence, perfectionism and grace. Every parent of a kid who is at least in elementary school has been given artworks that are of modest skill and humble materials, the proverbial macaroni art. Nonetheless, just as common, a parent receives such gifts with delight and affection. I find it encouraging to envision God receiving my less-than-skillful contributions to life with delight and affection. Of course, that which is most human and divine is so much more than “stuff.” May our relationships be overflowing with delight and affection.
