{"id":870,"date":"2013-05-30T08:49:26","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T13:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=870"},"modified":"2013-05-30T08:49:26","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T13:49:26","slug":"poem-sound-one-hand-clapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/30\/poem-sound-one-hand-clapping\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Sound of One Hand Clapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">What is the sound of one hand clapping?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">For many, it is a slap of the forehead in exasperation<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">For some, it is a slap in the face of the asker<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Could someone lend a hand on this one<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Without doubling the trouble?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This poem is based on the infamous koan. \u00a0A koan, such as &#8220;what is the sound of one hand clapping,&#8221; is a paradox to be meditated upon that is used to train Zen Buddhists to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and to force them into gaining sudden intuitive enlightenment. \u00a0I am inspired by Buddhist koans because they help free us from convergent thinking, the belief that there is a single best answer to any question. \u00a0Perceiving reality requires holding paradoxes within our consciousness. \u00a0A well-lived life requires balance and that balance is dynamic and always in flux. \u00a0This flux and movement is well captured by the question: which is more important, breathing in or breathing out? \u00a0The answer: It depends on what you have done last. \u00a0May you find balance in your life. \u00a0Surf the paradox!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the sound of one hand clapping?
