Today is the 42nd anniversary of the Kent State Massacre<\/a>, where four students were killed and nine students were injured when National Guard troops opened fire on anti-war demonstrators.\u00a0 Below is a picture of Arlington Midwest at Kent State, May 4, 2006.\u00a0 Arlington Midwest is a display of the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition<\/a> which organizes traveling displays of tombstones representing the human cost of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.\u00a0 The display includes a simulated tombstone with name, rank, age and state of origin for each fallen U.S. soldier.<\/p>\n

Below is a\u00a0 poem reflecting on the Kent State Massacre, by Terry Lodge, a member of the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition, activist lawyer, Toledo’s People’s Attorney, and usual suspect:<\/p>\n

Looking down from the black marble memorial<\/span>
\nGrave reminder<\/span>
\nOf a dark chapter<\/span>
\nA nonfiction nightmare<\/span>
\nPlayed out in an Ohio theater of war<\/span>
\nI’m halfway between Blanket Hill and the valley of<\/span> death of May 4, 1970<\/span>
\nAn observation post above a field of green<\/span>
\nToday dressed up as thousands of war crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is May<\/span>
\nAnd the semi-shade of the black oak branches<\/span>
\nAnd their celadon new leaves<\/span>
\nWreath the distant, orderly rows<\/span>
\nOf white spring petals<\/span>
\nFallen from the Tree of Life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tears water this chiaroscuro of whitewash, nestled<\/span>
\nIn the shadows where crimes against humanity are plotted.<\/span>
\nFrom a distance, it’s a palette worthy of Manet,<\/span>
\nChoreographed by Rumsfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n

These petals will produce no fruit<\/span>
\nNor beauty or poetry<\/span>
\nTheir leaves are pages of the guest registers<\/span>
\nOf three thousand funeral homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Silently we listen<\/span>
\nFor some hopeful spring noise<\/span>
\nThat their blood might have nurtured,<\/span>
