{"id":2551,"date":"2016-10-21T09:10:42","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T14:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=2551"},"modified":"2022-02-27T13:07:21","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T18:07:21","slug":"poem-human-beans-in-a-chili-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/21\/poem-human-beans-in-a-chili-world\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Human Beans In A Chili World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What&#8217;s too like<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Human beans<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In a chili world<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Offering ourselves<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As nourishing fare<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In the face of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ingrate full consumers<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Somehow besting<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Our pre-sumptuous purpose<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of going to seed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And razing our own<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Only to be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Food agin and agin<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As brood over<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>What incite us<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And what has meaning<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>At the end of your daze<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Is the same<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>What&#8217;s eating you<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Those unpleasant spitting images<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poem is an ode to one of the deepest paradoxes in life: that you must lose your life in order to gain it. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Martin-Luther-King\/Buttons\/No-one-really-knows-why-they-are-alive-until-they-know-what-they-d-die-for-MLK-QUOTE-BUTTON.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Martin-Luther-King\/No-one-really-knows-why-they-are-alive-until-they-know-what-they-d-die-for.gif\" alt=\"No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they'd die for. MLK QUOTE BUTTON\" width=\"173\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a>Such a paradox is replete with metaphors of seeds, death and resurrection, of sacrificing that of great value for that of greater value. \u00a0Plus, in life there is no dress rehearsal: we won&#8217;t be food again! \u00a0Of course, that perplexing aspect of human life which is infinitely complicated is humans: ungrateful, self-centered, and irreducibly exasperating. \u00a0In my view, the best way to see more clearly in the fun-house mirror that is human life is to cultivate self-awareness of psychological projection, the powerful and cunning tendency to attribute to others what is subconscious in ourselves, particularly the bad stuff. \u00a0In laymen&#8217;s terms: spot it you got it! \u00a0Of course, such cultivation is mirror reflection if there isn&#8217;t any skin in the game &#8212; little is harvested with simply good intentions. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Peace\/Buttons\/Pacifism-A-Way-of-Life-Man-Does-Not-Die-By-Bled-Alone-PEACE-BUTTON.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/ProductImages\/peace_anti_war_political_public_health_pictures\/Pacifism_A_Way_of_Life-_Man_Does_Not_Die_By_Bled_Alone.gif\" alt=\"Pacifism - A Way of Life - Man Does Not Die By Bled Alone -- PEACE BUTTON\" width=\"172\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>Self-sacrifice is inescapable if we are to unearth enduring meaning rather than perpetual mean-ings on earth. \u00a0The ubiquity of iniquity, the proclivity to project our own evil onto others (<em>&#8220;Those unpleasant spitting images&#8221;<\/em>) is the tragic root of writing people off as chaff rather than cultivating seed. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Peace\/Buttons\/Would-You-Die-For-Common-Ground-PEACE-BUTTON.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Peace\/Would-You-Die-For-Common-Ground.gif\" alt=\"Would You Die For Common Ground PEACE BUTTON\" width=\"172\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>The paradoxical solution is that by becoming food for others, and &#8212; as in vice versa &#8212; by becoming food for ourselves, we are awe saved. \u00a0Such wonderment eternally returns me to loving my enemy, a journey that can only be made within one&#8217;s self and never without others. \u00a0I find this mysterious process at the heart of social action &#8212; the nexus of the inner and outer journeys, joined at the hip &#8212; perhaps most succinctly described in the social activist creed and Mexican \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/archive\/glimpse-zapatista-movement-two-decades-later\/\">Zapatista<\/a> proverb: &#8220;They tried to bury us.
