\nEnough<\/strong>
\nOf half-baked politicians<\/strong>
\nShe kneaded democracy<\/strong>
\nHere and now<\/strong>
\nAs the yeast she could do<\/strong>
\nSounding off<\/strong>
\nTo those who might<\/strong>
\nListen<\/strong>
\nWee choir not<\/strong>
\nA grand stand<\/strong>
\nTo lift every voice and sing<\/strong>
\nWringing well<\/strong>
\nThe harmonies of liberty<\/strong>
\nHowever aloud the rolling sees<\/strong>
\nOur ayes will have it<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is a tribute to the enduring importance of movement politics as the truest driving force for social and political change, working for justice for all.\"Justice:<\/a> \u00a0This poem is a tribute to political activists who do most of their work outside formal electoral politics. \u00a0Such action is centered out of the direct lived experiences of broken hearts and broken lives as opposed to white papers and think tanks.<\/p>\n

Most people of privilege and power will roll their eyes when hope dares rise from despairing circumstances to demand\u00a0justice, aka “too much.” \u00a0“They just don’t get it” the condescension goes, as if people on the short end of power don’t know how the world\u00a0works. \u00a0“Not getting it” may be true inasmuch as the powers that be have “it” and don’t give anything but a shit. \u00a0Mainstream politics is almost by definition reactionary. \u00a0\"The<\/a>The fear of losing “it” at best and organized greed at worst, short-circuits justice in our so-called democracy for countless minorities (disenfranchised folks of every stripe), which deeply ironically comprise a majority of our nation. \u00a0If the 1% are masters of anything, they are masters of dividing an overwhelming majority of the populace against each other to assure that none of their many legitimate grievances are fully redressed. \u00a0\"Human<\/a>Fear of losing whatever one has sides with frightening regularity with the increasingly routinely vain hope of “upward” mobility, aligning itself with organized greed, all to avoid earnestly\u00a0casting one’s lot with the poor and disenfranchised.<\/p>\n

All of this breaks my heart — not my will or hope.\u00a0This poem alludes to the rousing song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing<\/a>,” which is often referred to as the “Black American National Anthem.” This song beautifully embodies and honors in music and lyric the undying hope and ultimate commitments arising like a phoenix out of countless inhumanities and death itself to keep our eyes unwaveringly on the prize: justice for all. \u00a0This song was\u00a0written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871\u20131938) in 1899 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson (1873\u20131954) in 1900, the lyrics of which are:<\/p>\n

Lift every voice and sing<\/em>
\nTill earth and heaven ring,<\/em>
\nRing with the harmonies of Liberty;<\/em>
\nLet our rejoicing rise,<\/em>
\nHigh as the list’ning skies,<\/em>
\nLet it resound loud as the rolling sea.<\/em>
\nSing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,<\/em>
\nSing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,<\/em>
\nFacing the rising sun of our new day begun,<\/em>
\nLet us march on till victory is won.<\/em><\/p>\n

Stony the road we trod,<\/em>
\nBitter the chastening rod,<\/em>
\nFelt in the days when hope unborn had died;<\/em>
\nYet with a steady beat,<\/em>
\nHave not our weary feet<\/em>
\nCome to the place for which our fathers sighed<\/em>
\nWe have come over a way that with tears has been watered,<\/em>
\nWe have come treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,<\/em>
\nOut from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last<\/em>
\nWhere the white gleam of our bright star is cast.<\/em><\/p>\n

God of our weary years,<\/em>
\nGod of our silent tears,<\/em>
\nThou who hast brought us thus far on the way;<\/em>
\nThou who has by Thy might<\/em>
\nLed us into the light,<\/em>
\nKeep us forever in the path, we pray.<\/em>
\nLest, our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,<\/em>
\nLest, our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee,<\/em>
\nShadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,<\/em>
\nTrue to our God, true to our native land.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
