I am a white, straight, Christian, male<\/strong>
\nAnd you see that<\/strong>
\nI am afraid<\/strong>
\nThough paying attention<\/strong>
\nTo what is fare<\/strong>
\nI am more afraid<\/strong>
\nOf whites than blacks<\/strong>
\nOf straights than queers<\/strong>
\nOf Christians than Muslims<\/strong>
\nOf men than women<\/strong>
\nOf what is in than out<\/strong>
\nOf wear it so easy<\/strong>
\nTo be dark, crooked, un-Christian, and un-manly<\/strong>
\nStanding on my privy ledge<\/strong>
\nOnly names dropping<\/strong>
\nAnd eliminating a void<\/strong>
\nFor it’s all in<\/strong>
\nThe taking<\/strong>
\nThat in is capable plunge<\/strong>
\nBefore the plumb it<\/strong>
\nTakes us<\/strong>
\nAwe down<\/strong>
\nOar<\/strong>
\nRun over by a drain<\/strong>
\nHoley a bout<\/strong>
\nIn which wee re-side<\/strong>
\nAnd set assail<\/strong>
\nAs expect torrent-ly weight<\/strong>
\nUp on that wayward look out<\/strong>
\nGoing long with dinghy surroundings<\/strong>
\nOnly keeping us on won’s tows<\/strong>
\nCastles in the err<\/strong>
\nAs hope tangles with whose faltering<\/strong>
\nIf only to feel<\/strong>
\nThe win behind your back<\/strong>
\nIn one fell sloop<\/strong>
\nWithout assemblance of humanity<\/strong>
\nRipping that one accord<\/strong>
\nWith know shoot culpable save you<\/strong>
\nYou are precariously throne<\/strong>
\nAs a matter of coarse, bowled over<\/strong>
\nUn-less first choice<\/strong>
\nTo devote your undivided tension<\/strong>
\nTo what is fare<\/strong>
\nForsake of humanity<\/strong>
\nEither weigh<\/strong>
\nThat first step <\/strong>
\nIs a due see<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is about privilege: the\u00a0privilege men have over women,\u00a0the privilege whites\u00a0have over blacks and other people of color, the\u00a0privilege Christians\u00a0have over Muslims,\u00a0the privilege straight folks\u00a0have over queer folk. \u00a0 \"Privilege<\/a>\"End<\/a>This is a first person poem, in that I am such a multi-privileged person. \u00a0The unnamed privilege in this poem is\u00a0the privilege people living in the first-world\u00a0have over people living in the second- or third-world (or as some say: the two-thirds world).<\/p>\n

I have been pondering the reality of privilege most of my life. \u00a0I consider my birth into this world in Haiti, but as a son of white, well-educated Americans, as representative of profound tensions within my life in relation to the many human conundrums set up by vast differences in privilege. \u00a0My Mennonite heritage, steeped in values of simple living, has been a fortuitous foundation for my drift into economic irrelevancy and semi-voluntary poverty. \"Live<\/a>My training and career in public health has afforded me a perspective rich in dealing with social justice. \u00a0My vocation and avocation as a social justice activist has yielded abundant opportunities to stand in\u00a0solidarity with my human kin, and even reflect upon\u00a0erudite concepts such as intersectionality. \u00a0My short stint in prison plus hanging around more poor folks has helped prompt me to shed some of my middle-class sensibilities. \u00a0I am working intentionally to trade many of my first world problems for second- and third-world problems. \u00a0Yet, perhaps the greatest testament to my many privileges, is that I still feel like the richest person I know (though I don’t really get out that much).<\/p>\n

Recently, my dealing with privilege\u00a0has been kicked into high gear, with the advent of the Black Lives Matter movement. \u00a0\"BLACK<\/a>I am deeply grateful to all of the people of color, queer folk, highly conscious feminists, and “others” who have enriched my life beyond belief. \u00a0\"got<\/a>I hope that the privilege I have at my disposable serves the larger interest of equality for all. \u00a0May any privilege we possess not possess us but spur us to break down any inhuman barriers that separate us.<\/p>\n
