Have empty<\/strong>
\nHave full<\/strong>
\nPundit prognosticating<\/strong>
\nWeather tea town, big gulp, whine, or throwback<\/strong>
\nAfter work<\/strong>
\nAll a buzz<\/strong>
\nA bout how well suited politicians<\/strong>
\nRe-billed a city of denim<\/strong>
\nPutting out hope<\/strong>
\nIn efface of houses emptied<\/strong>
\nAnd streets full<\/strong>
\nOf potholes<\/strong>
\nTeeming with orange barrels<\/strong>
\nAnd every fuel for Toledo<\/strong>
\nEver wandering, “Will we be Jeeped or not?”<\/strong>
\nFor what’s frog town without croaking? <\/strong>
\nThat looming will<\/strong>
\nWe be relegated community?<\/strong>
\nWholly Toledo, some kind of perfect zoo<\/strong>
\nAnd a world class heart museum<\/strong>
\nWhere boosters must incurably cry out<\/strong>
\nI think not!<\/strong>
\nKnow!<\/strong>
\nThis is the biggest little town in America<\/strong>
\nAnd those a little too full of it<\/strong>
\nHead for the Hills<\/strong>
\nAs if<\/strong>
\nThey due butter<\/strong>
\nWhen you can’t beat the accost of living<\/strong>
\nOf those in the no<\/strong>
\nIf have full, drink up<\/strong>
\nIf have empty, just wait a round<\/strong>
\nThe Glass City is refillable<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was hoping to win thirst prize with this Toledo poem, as my singular entry into the 2016\u00a0annual Poetry and Fiction contest of the Toledo City Paper: Half Full or Half Empty. \u00a0But, alas, I am truly settle for placement\u00a0in a category called Dishonorable Mention. \u00a0This poem, about my beloved Toledo, reflects the self-deprecating, love-hate relationship that many Toledoans have with our esteemed town and occasionally reviled city. \u00a0The editor only had one question about my seriously playful, pun-filled wordplay: Was “A bout” my intended spelling. \u00a0As most often is the case when someone is confused about how to read my poems, the answer is: “Yes.” \u00a0There are many takes on the half-full\/half-empty question. \u00a0I find that the glass being refillable is the most appropriate and truly hopeful answer. \u00a0I consider Toledo as the hidden gem of the Midwest, perhaps of the whole country. \u00a0But, please, keep this on the down-low. \u00a0We don’t want a bunch of Toledo wannabes cluttering up the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
