{"id":2310,"date":"2016-06-07T17:15:34","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T22:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=2310"},"modified":"2016-06-07T18:11:54","modified_gmt":"2016-06-07T23:11:54","slug":"poem-enlightenment-not-worth-beings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/07\/poem-enlightenment-not-worth-beings\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Enlightenment Not Worth Beings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Conversing in the street<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>At a protest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>We had a very enlightening pow wow<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As too in form me<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He stated with qualm assurance<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Protest before enlightenment, protest after enlightenment&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A parity of action<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Like I had never seen<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To which I yack knowledged<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>You mean like<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Child abuse before enlightenment, child abuse after enlightenment&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And parently flailing attest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of means<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And states not worth beings<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As well as dis coarse<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With know end incite<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poem was inspired by a conversation I had with a fellow protester on the street. \u00a0As not subject to small talk, we touched upon the nature of enlightenment. \u00a0The undiscerning tautology of &#8220;[insert action] before enlightenment, [repeat same action] after enlightenment,&#8221; struck me as a perfect representation of New Age gobbledygook. \u00a0Hopefully, the palpable absurdity felt in one&#8217;s soul with my\u00a0succinct parody: &#8220;Child abuse before enlightenment, child abuse after enlightenment,&#8221; should be enough to dismiss such nonsense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/faiths\/2001\/06\/what-new-agers-believe.aspx\">New Age philosophy<\/a> and other forms of &#8220;immaterialism&#8221; view life as simply a spiritual process where specific ends literally don&#8217;t matter, and one meaning is as good or bad as the next meaning &#8212; and what meanings might follow from such inanity and insanity! \u00a0While such a whirled view may seem\u00a0an intriguing balance, or even antidote, to postmodern materialism, the reactionary amoral forces of materialism are mirrorly replaced with eerily similar nonreactionary amoral farces, conveniently well-suited to First-World privilege and god-like individualism. \u00a0Such absurd amorality rejects any set of collected knowledge about good and evil, leaving society with no landmarks to navigate\u00a0progress in manifesting goodness over and above evil. There is no right and wrong, only differences. \u00a0And while this may lead to a certain profoundly uncommitted form of tolerance, it leaves human rights awash, and human wrongs unaccounted for. \u00a0Such a perverse viewpoint is only inviting inasmuch as we trust in our own godness <em>alone<\/em>. \u00a0New Age spirituality&#8217;s OCD lock on &#8220;life as process&#8221; does reflect an incomplete truth related to the redemptive nature of essentially every world religion or perennial philosophy; that is, good can emerge\u00a0from evil. \u00a0Fortunately, these esteemed traditions do not collapse good into evil. \u00a0These age-old spiritual traditions value transformation in society and of society, not simply the fate of one soul divorced from all others &#8212; a lonely god fore better or worse. \u00a0In fact, if personal transformation means nothing in particular, then such spiritual progress is limited to oxymorons, and no one else. \u00a0Further, if there is no accountability to others, no legitimate demand\u00a0of others on us, then even the sparsest just us is untenable and unattainable. \u00a0I have long been intrigued by Buddha&#8217;s choice to remain present in this world to help others rather than blow out into nirvana, as he was do. \u00a0The good news of a social gospel should not be\u00a0tossed into a fiery dustbin from which nothing is retrievable &#8212; leaving only nothing as retrievable. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Martin-Luther-King\/Buttons\/The-hottest-place-in-Hell-is-reserved-for-those-who-remain-neutral-in-times-of-great-moral-conflict-MLK-BUTTON.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/toppun.com\/Martin-Luther-King\/hottest-place-in-hell.gif\" alt=\"The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict MLK BUTTON\" width=\"173\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a>While there is much wile in discerning good and evil, to reject such efforts out of hand is far\u00a0more dangerous. \u00a0I will gladly give a pass to my fellow protester, who may have simply been a victim of fuzzy thinking. \u00a0Of course, we can meditate on such unprophetable ruminations until the cows come home. \u00a0Still, it is passable to do the right thing for the wrong reason; just as doing the wrong thing for the right reason is culpable of\u00a0mends to the othercide of a fence. \u00a0Intentions and actions are two sides of the same flipping coin. \u00a0Means and ends are inseparable as attested to by anyone subject to any given mean or any fatal end. \u00a0To harmonize is the objective, not to monotonize the subjective.
