The man<\/strong>
\nReproached<\/strong>
\nWith muscles taut<\/strong>
\nJust as I stood up<\/strong>
\nWith a plank beyond question<\/strong>
\nA clear-cut match<\/strong>
\nTo the breach in the wall<\/strong>
\nAs an unwanted chink in won’s wooden amor<\/strong>
\nAs if adore rendering useless<\/strong>
\nIn efface of stock aid<\/strong>
\nAn other bull work<\/strong>
\nOnly offering<\/strong>
\nStiff generosity<\/strong>
\nTo mortals unlike<\/strong>
\nAs can and able<\/strong>
\nMirrorly as allot of frat aside<\/strong>
\nThinking knot necessarily evil<\/strong>
\nDoing the best they clan<\/strong>
\nAs the beam in his I gleaned<\/strong>
\nHe commanded<\/strong>
\nIn some grate atone<\/strong>
\nFor his manly timber back<\/strong>
\nOr he would forest me into much the sane stand<\/strong>
\nOr abettor yet a fence of steal<\/strong>
\nAs he was<\/strong>
\nThe executer of my state<\/strong>
\nAnd equity would be his<\/strong>
\nBye this time I had already gotten board<\/strong>
\nHaving lumbered away<\/strong>
\nAnd considered the whole madder<\/strong>
\nAs water under the bridge<\/strong>
\nThat I was building<\/strong>
\nFrom a hole in the wall<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem tells the story of someone taking a wooden plank from a barricade. At first glance, this may appear to be a destructive act. Yet, this singular action links two positive enterprises: creating a hole in a wall that divides and transforming that barrier into a bridge. The threat of “The man,” doubtless backed up by a passel of formal authority and police powers, is rendered irrelevant by the more nimble plank-gleaner and bridge-builder. Could this be a tale of anarchism wagging the dog that is state rule?<\/p>\n

This poem also gives a tip of the hat to “The wall,” which has gained iconic status with the Pink Floyd album of the same name. Here is a sampling of lyrics from that iconic album:<\/p>\n

All alone, or in two’s,<\/em>
\nThe ones who really love you<\/em>
\nWalk up and down outside the wall.<\/em>
\nSome hand in hand<\/em>
\nAnd some gathered together in bands.<\/em>
\nThe bleeding hearts and artists<\/em>
\nMake their stand.<\/em><\/p>\n

And when they’ve given you their all<\/em>
\nSome stagger and fall, after all it’s not easy<\/em>
\nBanging your heart against some mad bugger’s wall.<\/em><\/p>\n

Banging your heart against the impersonal apparatuses of the powers that be may seem feudal to sum, yet this may be the most humane response-ability given the alternative of simply being banged by an unjust status quo — and banged in places not limited to the heart.<\/p>\n
