{"id":1867,"date":"2015-08-31T15:24:52","date_gmt":"2015-08-31T20:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2015-08-31T15:24:52","modified_gmt":"2015-08-31T20:24:52","slug":"poem-opportunity-accost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/31\/poem-opportunity-accost\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Opportunity Accost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Having arrived<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Delivered by a private message<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The bad knews<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Out of the weigh<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Surrounded<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Only<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Good news ahead<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Able to attack<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On any affront<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This poem is based on an old joke, that goes something like this: The courier arrives with news from the battlefield, telling the general that he has good news and bad news, and asks which he would like first.\u00a0 The general asks for the bad news first.\u00a0 The courier indicates that they are surrounded by the enemy.\u00a0 The general then asks for the good news.\u00a0 The courier replies, &#8220;The good news is that we can attack on any front.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Every person that works on bettering the human condition knows that there is an abundance of needs, bordering on the overwhelming.\u00a0 This very reality is perhaps the leading cause of burnout among do-gooders.\u00a0 I like this old joke because it highlights the overwhelming opportunity present in life.\u00a0 While we may spend huge amounts of resources in needs assessments, and countless hours in planning meetings, to get just the right mix of strategies and interventions, you don&#8217;t have to look very far or even very closely to find human need.\u00a0 If a human need touches your heart, lend a hand, even your whole life if need be.\u00a0 As a former professional planner, now trying to recover from such a chronic predicament, I am reminded again of the quote from United Methodist theologian and activist Howard Thurman: &#8220;Don\u2019t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
