In the mettle of this
\nBrew aha
\nBeside myself
\nI took a stand
\nIn countering
\nSuch ponderous courting
\nHow civil this obedience
\nWear black
\nAnd white lies
\nSegregated
\nOnly spotted
\nAs if
\nSent out to posture
\nPresumptuous in a sense
\nHankering and pining
\nFor a lessen in manors
\nA peace of cake
\nWhere there cannot be
\nMoor to see
\nFrom the grate beyond
\nBeyond boarders
\nIs it sow untoward
\nA peace of meet
\nOnly Abel
\nToo illicit
\nJust a position
\nIn a neighborly weigh
\nOnly taken in
\nBuy such con text
\nThe privilege of preaching to a pact crowd
\nPer chased by background checks
\nBelting out promissory notes
\nNot worth a single digit
\nNor circling the wagons
\nIn a parent blackface
\nFalling off
\nWon’s bluff
\nOf unending figuring
\nFor a fraction of pi
\nHer ratio
\nOf protracted circumference
\nOver the shortest distance between points
\nEver present friend
\nOver cunning counsel
\nMore than subject
\nTo this hamlet
\nTheir I stood
\nQuiet a seeing
\nAs others
\nMight due
\nThe riot thing
\nFor wanton reason
\nAnd only if
\nMy silence aloud
\nMy batter judgment
\nToo get the best of me
\nAdmitted to a transcendent hospitality
\nAs dumb found patients
\nFor which we stand
\nThe qualm before the storm
\nOvercoming that which is
\nFast fooled
\nBringing order to the unrule he
\nUntold smiles to go
\nFor better than even
\nAs they crack me up
\nOr split my side
\nI live
\nFor that aha moment
\nHeart and neck stretching
\nAll the wile
\nRapping accord
\nThat can’t be broken
\nSo I’m tolled<\/p>\n

This is a poem about white privilege and racism, social justice and civil disobedience, and quite literally, putting some skin into the game.\u00a0 The brew aha theme offers a lighter, more ethereal tone to the poem.\u00a0 This poem addresses the immanent dangers of being deeply rooted in both transcendent realities and harsh physical and social realities.\u00a0 Race is the species argument driving this narrative.\u00a0 White privilege is the real dope here.\u00a0 Only such unmerited advantage can inspire such twisted rationalizations for ongoing supremacy and gross injustices.\u00a0 The challenges are great for both those to renounce unmerited advantage and for those to swim upstream against deep-seated oppression.\u00a0 Though there is no doubt that the ultimate accountability for justice rests with those who hold unmerited advantage over others.<\/p>\n

From a literary point of view, I am quite enamored with the blending of mathematical pi with Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Horatio in:<\/p>\n

Falling off<\/em>
\nWon’s bluff<\/em>
\nOf unending figuring<\/em>
\nFor a fraction of pi<\/em>
\nHer ratio<\/em>
\nOf protracted circumference<\/em>
\nOver the shortest distance between points<\/em>
\nEver present friend<\/em>
\nOver cunning counsel<\/em>
\nMore than subject<\/em>
\nTo this hamlet<\/em><\/p>\n

Amidst the endless, fruitless scheming in Hamlet <\/em>(Falling off\/Won’s bluff\/Of unending figuring\/For a fraction of pi), Horatio (Her ratio) defines the whole of pie fully in his loyal and unpretentious friendship with Hamlet (Of protracted circumference\/Over the shortest distance between points).\u00a0 And with that last phrase, perhaps I’ve even invented a new poetical form: die a meter.\u00a0 Of course, Horatio (mathematically) proves his loyalty, offering a true home for Hamlet, more than mere pandering to royalty (Ever present friend\/Over cunning counsel\/More than subject\/To this hamlet).<\/p>\n

As recounted elsewhere<\/a>:<\/p>\n

At the end of the play, Horatio proposes to finish off the poisoned drink which was intended for Hamlet, saying that he is ‘more an antique Roman than a Dane’, but the dying prince implores Horatio not to drink from the cup and bids his friend to live and help put things right in Denmark; “If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart, \/ Absent thee from felicity a while, \/ And in this harsh world draw thy breath in pain \/ To tell my story.” Hamlet, speaking of death as “felicity”, commands Horatio to wait “a while” to tell the story; perhaps Hamlet dies expecting his friend to follow as soon as the complete story has been told.<\/em><\/p>\n

Perhaps one of the greatest honors we have in life is to witness and re-tell the stories of others.\u00a0 May we each live lives worth re-telling…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
