\nHe refuse<\/strong>
\nTo beg for change<\/strong>
\nAs riddled with ballots<\/strong>
\nFrom a stone throne<\/strong>
\nPresumed in a sense<\/strong>
\nAs the free mark it<\/strong>
\nTo mock a difference<\/strong>
\nIn hour damn nation<\/strong>
\nWeather staying qualm<\/strong>
\nOr carrying on<\/strong>
\nAs beheading<\/strong>
\nThe wrong direction<\/strong>
\nRight<\/strong>
\nThat’s going to work<\/strong>
\nLike pulling jobs<\/strong>
\nOut of a hat<\/strong>
\nRailroaded<\/strong>
\nAnd Rand over<\/strong>
\nTake<\/strong>
\nYou’re choice<\/strong>
\nTaking liberties<\/strong>
\nWear ever<\/strong>
\nWhatever<\/strong>
\nLeft<\/strong>
\nDying<\/strong>
\nWith boots on<\/strong>
\nWon’s neck<\/strong>
\nAnd arms flailing<\/strong>
\nIn the heir<\/strong>
\nViolins playing<\/strong>
\nUS again<\/strong>
\nAnd masses cry<\/strong>
\nWeight<\/strong>
\nFor some guardian angle<\/strong>
\nFollowing-lite<\/strong>
\n30 seconds and never the goaled<\/strong>
\nPromising silver ballots<\/strong>
\nFor the monster knock off of your choice<\/strong>
\nThe leaser of two evils<\/strong>
\nBilled on platforms not worth one read assent<\/strong>
\nRhetorical quests in<\/strong>
\nSkirting half the populace<\/strong>
\nOut flanking the body politic<\/strong>
\nAnd the only deliverance<\/strong>
\nIs backwards male junk<\/strong>
\nRidden on drossy stationary<\/strong>
\nAcceding Stepford lives<\/strong>
\nAndroids answering robo calls<\/strong>
\nBuy passing any hire power<\/strong>
\nRebutting humanity<\/strong>
\nLike sum tally whacker<\/strong>
\nAwl to govern us<\/strong>
\nViolating our hides<\/strong>
\nOut ranking privates<\/strong>
\nAnother poll taken<\/strong>
\nAs nations pawned<\/strong>
\nAnd questions razed<\/strong>
\nFrom the dread<\/strong>
\nThe answer<\/strong>
\nLies<\/strong>
\nBefore us<\/strong>
\nAnd incite us<\/strong>
\nThe time is now<\/strong>
\nTo re-wind<\/strong>
\nThese vane choices<\/strong>
\nTruly bearing<\/strong>
\nAs wee<\/strong>
\nVote with our feat<\/strong>
\nAnd in-F-able arts<\/strong>
\nDe-serving<\/strong>
\nMore than one date a year<\/strong>
\nArrest of our daze<\/strong>
\nCourting flaccid elections<\/strong>
\nFeudal proposals<\/strong>
\nAnd tickets beyond won’s means<\/strong>
\nSoully to forge more candid dates<\/strong>
\nAnd over power<\/strong>
\nOur faux<\/strong>
\nNever miss lead<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s election day!\u00a0 This election poem captures the perennially popular cynicism concerning politics, particularly electoral politics, and issues a call for a more encompassing path to redress our collective grievances and embody our shared hopes.\u00a0 In short, this entails year-round civic engagement where citizens vote regularly by putting some skin in the game and pouring their hearts into public life.\u00a0 This sort of direct democracy leads by representing ourselves boldly and honestly to one another, backed up by whatever integrity we have in our lives.\u00a0 We get the democracy we deserve.\u00a0 Or, in this case, we get the democracy we de-serve.\u00a0 We stop serving power structures and start serving one another.\u00a0\u00a0 This saps the top-down power so fraught with abuse and alluring to those more interested in governing others than governing themselves.\u00a0 There is no patchwork of half-truths that can stand without the consent of the governed.\u00a0 Elections are largely contrived of narrow choices pandering to the powers that be and offering mere styles of the status quo.\u00a0 If we settle for a democracy that only works a day or two a year, and barely that, then we should adjust our expectations commensurately.\u00a0 Though this is not the only choice: hemmed and hawed candidates or non-participation, not voting.\u00a0 Whether you vote or not — and I think you should make such a modest investment of time — the body politic is not formed in a day or two.\u00a0 What we do the rest of our days is decisive.\u00a0 Work, shop, consume, die may be one way to go, but what price do we pay for our “free” time.\u00a0 Free people live and give freely.\u00a0 Free people are the freedom the want to see in the world; they are not waiting for license from others.\u00a0 I like the saying: activism is the rent I pay for living on this planet.\u00a0 I occupy this planet first, am a member of the human race second, and a citizen of a particular political jurisdiction\/shopping zone thirdly.\u00a0 If we unabashedly order our lives according to our deepest values and priorities, the sheer existential force of our lives will champion our planet, give rise to a cherished humanity, and even create a firewall against bullshit politics mistaken for a fertile common-wealth.\u00a0 Of course, like they say, freedom isn’t free.\u00a0 Being change in the world will exact a price.\u00a0 And while you may only get what you pay for, there are untolled pleasant surprises along the way.\u00a0 The only real question is how much are you willing to pay, and how much are you willing to play?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
