He said<\/strong>
\n“The world is inert.”<\/strong>
\nI said<\/strong>
\n“You mean<\/strong>
\nDead?”<\/strong>
\nHe re-plied<\/strong>
\nThat it is<\/strong>
\nAssure thing<\/strong>
\nBeyond doubt<\/strong>
\nI queeried<\/strong>
\n“On your incite<\/strong>
\nOr the out?”<\/strong>
\nBy all means<\/strong>
\nNecessary<\/strong>
\nAs you must<\/strong>
\nAnd arbitrary mold<\/strong>
\nNo higher power<\/strong>
\nShowing favor<\/strong>
\nTo indistinguishable accidents<\/strong>
\nThrough grub<\/strong>
\nAnd poorly aimed reproductions<\/strong>
\nEqually fluked<\/strong>
\nKnow matter<\/strong>
\nHow ever wondrous fits<\/strong>
\nDue too survivalists<\/strong>
\nAll ready<\/strong>
\nBe rift of life<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is inspired by many encounters that I have had with people who pose a materialist philosophy or perspective on “life” — that inexplicably animated portion of our “inert” universe.\u00a0 I have to chuckle a little, and mourn a bit, as this view that the universe is dead matter strikes me as a surpassingly surreal projection of one’s inner experience, as either incurious, blind, or in denial about the mysterious nature of nature.\u00a0 A striking feature of subjectivity is that we tend to see the world as we are, not as the world is.\u00a0 That anyone would argue that we are dead seems to preclude any lively conversation!\u00a0 Fortunately, I often don’t listen to what people say.\u00a0 I generally assume that if someone’s lips are moving that they are alive, despite their best arguments against it.\u00a0 While anti-evolutionists manage to embody their arguments with their epic failure to evolve, materialists betray themselves with every movement, especially the ones that claim deep self-reflection.\u00a0 Nonetheless, I strongly suspect that it is better to be riffed of life than bereft of life.\u00a0 Pay no attention to the dummies behind the curtain, moving their lips but to know a veil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
