I am petroleum<\/strong>
\nI am coal<\/strong>
\nI am “natural” gas<\/strong>
\nSet me free<\/strong>
\nFrom my dark and stony hearth<\/strong>
\nMy fiery nature lying in wait<\/strong>
\nSow vent on destruction<\/strong>
\nAnd I will bequeath<\/strong>
\nOnce-in-an-eon jobs<\/strong>
\nThat you will blow<\/strong>
\nIn your cracking and fracking<\/strong>
\nAs so much money<\/strong>
\nWith climate change to spare<\/strong>
\nBusy having<\/strong>
\nThe tomb of your life<\/strong>
\nFor when civilization collapses<\/strong>
\nAnd you are waste deep interred<\/strong>
\nWith my underworld nature unleashed<\/strong>
\nMeting yours<\/strong>
\nI will catacomb your world<\/strong>
\nExchanging your place for mine<\/strong>
\nAnd what remains of humanity<\/strong>
\nAt best will see me<\/strong>
\nAs know more than a sentimental fuel<\/strong>
\nSpewing out worthless airs<\/strong>
\nTo the end of the earth<\/strong><\/p>\n

I find myself writing more and more poems about our environment, particularly about the crisis of climate change.\u00a0 This aptly reflects my conviction that dealing with climate change and establishing a sustainable harmony with mother nature is the biggest challenge that humanity faces this century.\u00a0 I feel confident saying this, even though we are still early in the century.<\/p>\n

This poem is written as a first person poem, where carbon-based energy forms, long sequestered safely underground, encourage us to free them from their long-established place in nature.\u00a0 In this poem, the personification of carbon-based energy takes on a demonic, underworld character.\u00a0 The promise of “once-in-an-eon jobs” seems an offer more than generous enough to lock us unto our fossil fuelish addiction.\u00a0 Now, I don’t believe in demons, surely none emanating from mother nature’s bosom.\u00a0 But who needs hell when you have greedy and lazy humans who apparently would rather drown in their own waste than pay adequate respect to their mother.\u00a0 Humans have, in effect, made themselves a bunch of mothers — and not very good ones. This is original sin; the rest is derivative.\u00a0 I see no animus in mother earth.\u00a0 Still, nature does have boundaries with predictable feedback.\u00a0 If mother earth keeps have to dealing with all this human shit, then I expect mother earth will have enemas.\u00a0 And even us fans of the earth will get hit with it…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
