A critic posed<\/strong>
\nA question<\/strong>
\nIs poetry dead?<\/strong>
\nBut for the piles of dead poets<\/strong>
\nWorth only one read assent<\/strong>
\nA qualm comes<\/strong>
\nOver me<\/strong>
\nAs death summons<\/strong>
\nUnwanted clarity<\/strong>
\nBetween write and throng<\/strong>
\nStern and bow<\/strong>
\nA demanding curt see<\/strong>
\nIn deifying gravity<\/strong>
\nThose eternal questions<\/strong>
\nOnly to pass a weigh<\/strong>
\nInto yawning darkness<\/strong>
\nAnd for what must be left<\/strong>
\nTo others<\/strong>
\nMaking light<\/strong>
\nOf unfathomable depths<\/strong>
\nKnow less than a resurrection<\/strong>
\nUplifting that which cannot be lifted<\/strong>
\nTo be more<\/strong>
\nThan a fly by knight<\/strong>
\nScrounging heir to inspire<\/strong>
\nTill the finality of our daze<\/strong>
\nWhatever<\/strong>
\nYou call the question<\/strong>
\nToo the cynic<\/strong>
\nThe answer begged is “yes”<\/strong>
\nTo the forged quest in<\/strong>
\nAt best a loan victory<\/strong>
\nTo the poet<\/strong>
\nThere is know<\/strong>
\nQuestion<\/strong>
\nAnd undying rejoin<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem was inspired by an article, from no less than the New York Times, entitled, “Is Poetry Dead?<\/a>” that was sent to me by my Dad. Fortunately, the subtitle was “Not if 45 Official Laureates Are Any Indication.” Nonetheless, that even posing such a cynical question can inspire poetry is answer enough to such a foolish question.<\/p>\n

When the eternal questions wrought from the foundations of reality can no longer summon the slightest awe from which any human dare speak, then poetry may be declared dead. The death certificate will be signed by absolute prose. Such last writes will have no need of a wake, and nothing human need be bared. THE END.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
