America’s quest for monarchy<\/strong>
\nFailed again<\/strong>
\nA triple crown thwarted<\/strong>
\nThe quest for total domination<\/strong>
\nFoundering<\/strong>
\nAnother cracker jack faux<\/strong>
\nA for-see-able sir prize<\/strong>
\nCalifornian gold transmuted<\/strong>
\nInto chrome<\/strong>
\nBronzed<\/strong>
\nA tanned hide<\/strong>
\nSoon forgotten<\/strong>
\nA hoarse race<\/strong>
\nA poorer proxy<\/strong>
\nOf true human feat<\/strong>
\nRuled by what is<\/strong>
\nLess swift<\/strong>
\nNeeding powerful spectacles<\/strong>
\nTo not see<\/strong>
\nOver and over<\/strong>
\nHour consolation prize<\/strong>
\nEver settling for the gaming<\/strong>
\nOf plutocracy<\/strong>
\nThe royal fleecing<\/strong>
\nOf sheep<\/strong>
\nBuy domesticated wolves<\/strong>
\nFor equestrian<\/strong>
\nRiding <\/strong>
\nTo the end of the world<\/strong>
\nIn minutes<\/strong>
\nFlat<\/strong>
\nRe-lying on vain hopes<\/strong>
\nOur ambitions<\/strong>
\nRunning around in circles<\/strong>
\nAn opulent haunt<\/strong>
\nOf who most dashing<\/strong>
\nHow ever a ware<\/strong>
\nIt is US<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2014 odds on favorite to with horse racing’s triple crown, California Chrome, finished an unmemorable third place, leaving it’s legacy bronzed and lifeless.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to watch the spectacle of horse racing without at least some class consciousness.\u00a0 Perhaps this is a good thing.\u00a0 In this poem, I use the fodder of this most apparent “gentleman’s” sport as an opportunity to expose it’s more seedy underpinnings.\u00a0 Whether horse racing or NASCAR racing, sport is big business and a necessary distraction from less sporting, and even less gentlemanly, enterprises.<\/p>\n

Americans love a winner.\u00a0 More so, Americans love domination.\u00a0 For Americans, there is something that resonates with one “competitor” so dominating others that it is scarcely a competition.\u00a0 This strikes me as something to do with America’s love affair with “exceptionalism,” specifically American exceptionalism.\u00a0 The shock and awe of being so much superior than any and all other competitors under-girds a dark morality where might makes right and vulnerability is banished from human, or at least American, or at least elite American, experience.\u00a0 And while not all of US may be playing on the super-achieving Team America, we can all at least root for the home team.\u00a0 In it’s most blatant form, this is killing all of our enemies, “terrorists,” who would dare challenge, or daresay “compete,” with the American weigh of life.<\/p>\n

Since monarchy itself is d\u00e9class\u00e9, we have to repackage it into the monarchy of plutocrats and the aristocracy of celebrity.\u00a0 The plutocrats sell us celebrity, and the increasingly hollow American dream of becoming rich ourselves.\u00a0 Plenty buy such pablum.\u00a0 Any one of us running head to head or fighting toe to toe with the plutocrats may not even be in a horse race, but together we need not re-lie on singular saviors.<\/p>\n

Our salvation rests in the masses standing against the few, the plutocratic oligarchs, and building communities based on egalitarianism, not exceptionalism.\u00a0 We need less spectating and more participating.\u00a0 We need less fans and more teammates.\u00a0 We need less co-opting and more cooperation.\u00a0 We need less jockeying and more mutual aid.\u00a0 Let’s make it so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
