From oasis to oasis<\/strong>
\nStraw men<\/strong>
\nHiring suckers<\/strong>
\nLiving under<\/strong>
\nDissembled bridges<\/strong>
\nUntil it’s over<\/strong>
\nTroubled waters<\/strong>
\nWhat’s the hold-up<\/strong>
\nLiving for weak ends<\/strong>
\nAnd long vocations<\/strong>
\nUntil<\/strong>
\nDown<\/strong>
\nUnder<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nOne foot in front of the other<\/strong>
\nA hexing feat<\/strong>
\nA plod<\/strong>
\nBought and paid for<\/strong>
\nBuy decisions made years a go<\/strong>
\nPutting off family <\/strong>
\nFor eternal wrest<\/strong>
\nFriends only gathering in your wake<\/strong>
\nA bout time<\/strong>
\nSpent<\/strong>
\nPourly<\/strong>
\nUntil<\/strong>
\nCan’t take it<\/strong>
\nWith them<\/strong>
\nPassing on<\/strong>
\nAn assuming manor<\/strong>
\nAnd a partiality<\/strong>
\nFor a stylized life<\/strong>
\nAnd conspicuous consumption<\/strong>
\nWear cleanliness is next to gaudiness<\/strong>
\nAwe made passable<\/strong>
\nBy a peacocky overcompensation<\/strong>
\nSurpassing one’s station<\/strong>
\nIn life<\/strong>
\nA haven untaxed<\/strong>
\nIn death<\/strong>
\nA surety<\/strong>
\nAs won might<\/strong>
\nHave guest it<\/strong>
\nA regretful time share<\/strong>
\nAs when the first homme isn’t enough<\/strong>
\nAlways returning<\/strong>
\nToo more earnest dwellings<\/strong>
\nHarping on<\/strong>
\nThe good old daze<\/strong>
\nNot even<\/strong>
\nFor a second<\/strong>
\nHelping<\/strong>
\nBut for the hole shebang<\/strong>
\nIn unremitting a morality<\/strong>
\nA temporary re-treat<\/strong>
\nFrom the fire down below<\/strong>
\nFeeling the heat<\/strong>
\nStrokes of genius<\/strong>
\nClever ruses billed<\/strong>
\nOn foundations of sand<\/strong>
\nOffering slim hope<\/strong>
\nFor the porous<\/strong>
\nAs liquid assets evaporating<\/strong>
\nIn a desert temp<\/strong>
\nAn oasis scarcely better<\/strong>
\nThen a mirage<\/strong>
\nFor those sitting on the parch<\/strong>
\nA weigh station<\/strong>
\nTo check their baggage<\/strong>
\nPerhaps pick up some more<\/strong>
\nSouvenirs<\/strong>
\nFor the trip<\/strong>
\nOver their own feat<\/strong>
\nPlunging an unquenchable thirst<\/strong>
\nSkewering with spit<\/strong>
\nSweating bullets<\/strong>
\nIn humid climbs<\/strong>
\nYet like fish out of water<\/strong>
\nNo matter how hard<\/strong>
\nThey dry<\/strong>
\nFlailing to inspire<\/strong>
\nIn any such reckoning<\/strong>
\nAnd knot on your life<\/strong>
\nWill they settle<\/strong>
\nFor sum thing less<\/strong>
\nAnd weather they come<\/strong>
\nErgo<\/strong>
\nFor the wrest of US<\/strong>
\nTheir goes<\/strong>
\nThe neighborhood<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is an ode to so-called living from oasis to oasis rather than living sustainably in one oasis.\u00a0 I find that the so-called “carrot” of getting to the next oasis is actually more of a “stick” to nature and our humanity.\u00a0 Americans have suffered from a frontier mentality for centuries, ratcheting up suffering in increasingly exponential ways.\u00a0 Instead of doing the work of learning about and living within natural limits, humans race toward extinction, with a lengthy prologue and rate of over a hundred species a day.\u00a0 Living in harmony, sustainably within our natural environment, may very well be the most important lesson humans need to learn within the next few generations.\u00a0 There is little reason why we shouldn’t be able to learn this lesson, but whether we will avail ourselves of the benefits of learning this lesson is unclear.\u00a0 There is a classic, somewhat cynical exposition from the character Agent Smith in the movie, The Matrix<\/em>, which gives one perspective on the human race and human nature:<\/p>\n

“I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.”<\/em><\/p>\n

I find this description accurate.\u00a0 However, this history leaves unanswered how we will respond in the future.\u00a0 The relevant conundrum that I see in human nature is that the unprecedented capability humans have in making choices undetermined by nature is a serious double-edged sword.\u00a0 This very capability to stretch nature, even human nature, can lead to large, unsustainable ventures which bound over natural limits in which other living entities would be much more “naturally” restrained or contained.\u00a0 Perhaps paradoxically, this very same capability leaves open the potential to adapt quickly and recover a sustainable balance.\u00a0 I find hope in our ability to adapt.\u00a0 Still, humans have a long history of only doing the right thing after exhausting most every other possibility.\u00a0 The stakes are high, and realizing the high stakes may be the necessary impetus for humans to make necessary adjustments.\u00a0 Hopefully, we can restore a level of sanity and balance in time to avoid a catastrophic collapse of civilization and\/or the environment.\u00a0 Either way, living in harmony with nature is a better choice.\u00a0 We can vote with our lives and lifestyles.\u00a0 May we embrace our evolution, even revolution, to avoid devolution or extinction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
