God gets a bad wrap<\/strong>
\nAs do men<\/strong>
\nGloom<\/strong>
\nOver <\/strong>
\nRite and wrong<\/strong>
\nBabies borne of bathwater<\/strong>
\nThrone buy themselves<\/strong>
\nLike clay<\/strong>
\nGiving rise<\/strong>
\nTo the pitter potter of little feats<\/strong>
\nAnd inconceivable images<\/strong>
\nSpeaking out laud<\/strong>
\nIn a class by themselves<\/strong>
\nBastards won and all<\/strong>
\nIn celestial relationships<\/strong>
\nWith awe thumbs up<\/strong>
\nToo given the slip<\/strong>
\nSow fatefully fired<\/strong>
\nKnot from above<\/strong>
\nHardened arts of ode<\/strong>
\nAnd stone code making cooler heads<\/strong>
\nCommandments all deca-ed out<\/strong>
\nCan you digit<\/strong>
\nFor what remains<\/strong>
\nWon in the mettle<\/strong>
\nNo’ing only gods enflesh<\/strong>
\nAnd bones picking<\/strong>
\nWons fecund knows<\/strong>
\nAs dead pan humors<\/strong>
\nAnd how to think themselves<\/strong>
\nOutside the box<\/strong>
\nAnd portending wake<\/strong>
\nOnly breaking<\/strong>
\nThat awkward silence<\/strong>
\nAnd bound curiosity<\/strong>
\nEx-splaying stuff<\/strong>
\nA coffin in drag<\/strong>
\nEmployed in the coroner office<\/strong>
\nAs doody-full janitors<\/strong>
\nSo disposed<\/strong>
\nIn a sweeping universe<\/strong>
\nTaken out<\/strong>
\nBehind the would should<\/strong>
\nWile hearts still<\/strong>
\nBeating<\/strong>
\nOut standing in there feeled<\/strong>
\nStraw men ghostly flailing<\/strong>
\nWhich came first<\/strong>
\nThe bunny or the egg?<\/strong>
\nAn ironic inquisition<\/strong>
\nUnable to eat crow<\/strong>
\nSo far a field<\/strong>
\nFull of crop<\/strong>
\nMaking hay<\/strong>
\nOf men<\/strong>
\nWhich can’t be bailed<\/strong>
\nAs so determined<\/strong>
\nOnly Abel to must-er<\/strong>
\nBarren stock aid<\/strong>
\nA vestigial humanity<\/strong>
\nRemains incalculable<\/strong>
\nEven as calculating<\/strong>
\nBlinded by the blight<\/strong>
\nReckoning slight unseen<\/strong>
\nNothing sound to be hold<\/strong>
\nNo peeps to be herd<\/strong>
\nIn this objective a praise<\/strong>
\nUn-re-lie-able reports<\/strong>
\nOf being touched<\/strong>
\nDuring wholly observances<\/strong>
\nUntraceable soles<\/strong>
\nSave those who follow<\/strong>
\nA fare hearing too steep<\/strong>
\nKnow inviting savor to a t<\/strong>
\nAngles abandoning<\/strong>
\nNo read scent to be found<\/strong>
\nNot to be<\/strong>
\nIncensed by fragrant violations of logic<\/strong>
\nHaving bin burned before<\/strong>
\nAnd thinking it novel<\/strong>
\nSticking to non-friction<\/strong>
\nYet a tribute to nothing a tract<\/strong>
\nEasily excepting gravity<\/strong>
\nAnd perhaps animal magnetism<\/strong>
\nIn a random house<\/strong>
\nA glorious reproduction<\/strong>
\nFit to survive<\/strong>
\nIn terminable halls of tomes<\/strong>
\nCovering smiles from end to end<\/strong>
\nAtlas, holding the whirled<\/strong>
\nAnd shrugging<\/strong>
\nAs pass\u00e9<\/strong>
\nAges of old<\/strong>
\nQuipped with a thesaurus<\/strong>
\nIn countering the unspeakable<\/strong>
\nSuper seeding doubt<\/strong>
\nCalling out<\/strong>
\nAwe hail<\/strong>
\nToo the faithful<\/strong>
\nAs libel to slander <\/strong>
\nOf rites unridden<\/strong>
\nAnd xenophobic farces<\/strong>
\nPoorly versed<\/strong>
\nCaricatures<\/strong>
\nWith drawing<\/strong>
\nFrom think wells<\/strong>
\nDrying too hard<\/strong>
\nDistasteful to unknown palettes<\/strong>
\nA vapid likeness<\/strong>
\nRunning lapse<\/strong>
\nAround good taste<\/strong>
\nFor bitter or worse<\/strong>
\nNever winning<\/strong>
\nThe grace<\/strong>
\nUnfounded<\/strong>
\nEven though profits speaking<\/strong>
\nAssure us<\/strong>
\nFrom the freely given<\/strong>
\nWe make the most sense<\/strong>
\nOnly from blessed assumption<\/strong>
\nAre we<\/strong>
\nInfer the right of our life<\/strong>
\nOr in ability<\/strong>
\nTo take our hunch back<\/strong>
\nAnd so stoop id<\/strong>
\nEgos on and on<\/strong>
\nUn-till<\/strong>
\nWe are<\/strong>
\nSuper<\/strong>
\nWith unassuming cape-ability<\/strong>
\nThere is all ways won more<\/strong>
\nLast sup pose<\/strong>
\nSurrounded by friends<\/strong>
\nOr enemies<\/strong>
\nSo tight<\/strong>
\nGod sheds tears<\/strong>
\nIn a wrap so taut<\/strong>
\nA hide sew made <\/strong>
\nPelted by the dead <\/strong>
\nThe cruelest of stoles<\/strong>
\nWitnessed ever<\/strong>
\nOnly<\/strong>
\nEscaping such a cloak<\/strong>
\nFrom beyond assent<\/strong>
\nAs leapers never heeled<\/strong>
\nBy any crowning bluff<\/strong>
\nTranscending any convictions<\/strong>
\nIlliciting something knew<\/strong>
\nSurpassing the bounds of a head<\/strong>
\nA risqu\u00e9 gambol<\/strong>
\nWhen all that you are<\/strong>
\nGoes for bust<\/strong>
\nNever able to hold its own<\/strong>
\nIn the public square<\/strong>
\nSpilling the truth<\/strong>
\nOn all who will here<\/strong>
\nShould their eyes beam<\/strong>
\nAnd motes be crossed<\/strong>
\nTo take a hike to knew places<\/strong>
\nWhere nothing will be left<\/strong>
\nWanting more<\/strong>
\nEven when full<\/strong>
\nGroan<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is a long elaboration of a familiar theme of mine: the transcendent bigness of God and the cramped quarters built by man’s hubris.\u00a0 The poles of this theme are occupied by scientifically unverifiable but glorious experience of life and the denial of God, often on the grounds that any mental packaging of God is necessarily inadequate, a too messy foundation for some.\u00a0 The mystical reality that no description of God can do God justice is fodder for both believers and skeptics.\u00a0 Those anywhere on the spectrum from belief\/openness to skepticism\/denial are doomed to at least some measure of failure trying to give God any wrap in human terms.\u00a0 Believing in an open-ended God that cannot be put in a box strikes me as a rather predictable characteristic of the creator of life — life being a dynamic and messy endeavor.\u00a0 To continue maturation beyond a certain point as a human, belief is necessary — necessarily messy.\u00a0 Those who are agnostic strike me as trying to avoid confronting this juncture between the transcendent and the mundane.\u00a0 I think this can leave one developmentally disabled or delayed.\u00a0 Deniers strike me as having more hubris than tenuous believers because they must assert certainty to disqualify the question as a legitimate question.\u00a0 Of course, the is a seductive simplicity to addressing the nature of transcendence by simply saying it doesn’t exist.\u00a0 But, like Einstein said, “Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler.”<\/p>\n

Disagreements about God probably have little meaning as an abstract intellectual argument.\u00a0 God is definitely too big to fit in your head!\u00a0 Our conceptions related to the God question are ultimately questions of power.\u00a0 There seems to be a universal tendency in humans to not be lorded over by others.\u00a0 This part of our nature can serve both skepticism and belief.\u00a0 Questioning authority is a natural process when ultimate authority is open-ended and messy.\u00a0 Belief in such a higher power, one that doesn’t want submission but rather co-creative participation, frees us rather than enslaves us.\u00a0 Reality is bigger than our self.\u00a0 In at least one inescapable sense, we’ve gotta serve somebody or something (for those more comfortable with the impersonal).\u00a0 Bob Dylan captured this sense well in his song, Gotta Serve Somebody<\/a>:<\/p>\n

You may be an ambassador to England or France<\/em>
\nYou may like to gamble, you might like to dance<\/em>
\nYou may be the heavyweight champion of the world<\/em>
\nYou may be a socialite with a long string of pearls<\/em><\/p>\n

But you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed<\/em>

\nWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord<\/em>
\nBut you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em><\/p>\n

You might be a rock \u2019n\u2019 roll addict prancing on the stage<\/em>
\nYou might have drugs at your command, women in a cage<\/em>
\nYou may be a businessman or some high-degree thief<\/em>
\nThey may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief<\/em><\/p>\n

But you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed<\/em>
\nYou\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em>
\nWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord<\/em>
\nBut you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em><\/p>\n

You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk<\/em>
\nYou may be the head of some big TV network<\/em>
\nYou may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame<\/em>
\nYou may be living in another country under another name<\/em><\/p>\n

But you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed<\/em>
\nYou\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em>
\nWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord<\/em>
\nBut you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em><\/p>\n

You may be a construction worker working on a home<\/em>
\nYou may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome<\/em>
\nYou might own guns and you might even own tanks<\/em>
\nYou might be somebody\u2019s landlord, you might even own banks<\/em><\/p>\n

But you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed<\/em>

\nWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord<\/em>
\nBut you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em><\/p>\n

You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride<\/em>
\nYou may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side<\/em>
\nYou may be workin\u2019 in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair<\/em>
\nYou may be somebody\u2019s mistress, may be somebody\u2019s heir<\/em><\/p>\n

But you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed<\/em>

\nWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord<\/em>
\nBut you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody<\/em><\/p>\n

\nYou might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread<\/em>
