As the Show Must…Go On!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"theatrical-masks\"Desperately seeking an audience<\/strong>
\nWith kings, queens, and commoners<\/strong>
\nCall in the troupes!<\/strong>
\nWho will perform her<\/strong>
\nAspiring thespians<\/strong>
\nWilling to do Shakespeare<\/strong>
\nOr any low brow play right<\/strong>
\nAs parts are parts<\/strong>
\nWhether broad way<\/strong>
\nOr way, way off<\/strong>
\nA bawdy comedy<\/strong>
\nAs familiar as drama<\/strong>
\nAnd as Greek as tragedy<\/strong>
\nOf chorus<\/strong>
\nGetting a leg up<\/strong>
\nOn those with less rhythm<\/strong>
\nTwo bit players<\/strong>
\nTicketed by seasons<\/strong>
\nPerhaps a woman of an uncertain age<\/strong>
\nSeeking the roll of a lifetime<\/strong>
\nThe lines are long<\/strong>
\nAnd few are chosen<\/strong>
\nLuckily<\/strong>
\nProtagonists<\/strong>
\nAnd amateurs all<\/strong>
\nMake for stiff competition<\/strong>
\nBreaking a leg<\/strong>
\nTo be cast<\/strong>
\nBlinded by fancies<\/strong>
\nOf bright lights<\/strong>
\nAnd paid with applause<\/strong>
\nIn dark rooms<\/strong>
\nOnly wishing they were someone else<\/strong>
\nUntil curtains for all<\/strong>
\nCalling them out<\/strong>
\nUnmasked<\/strong>
\nAnd wearing customs<\/strong>
\nBoth foreign and familiar<\/strong>
\nGiving spy to private moments<\/strong>
\nAnd public scenes<\/strong>
\nUsual suspects<\/strong>
\nAnd unusual characters<\/strong>
\nTugging hearts<\/strong>
\nAnd funny bones tickled<\/strong>
\nInhabiting the dreams of others<\/strong>
\nConstructing story after story<\/strong>
\nWith strapping sets<\/strong>
\nAnd suggestive facades<\/strong>
\nGetting down to it<\/strong>
\nWith a portending fear<\/strong>
\nOf under study<\/strong>
\nPracticing your lyin’s<\/strong>
\nUntil with sincerity<\/strong>
\nPutting on<\/strong>
\nA peril<\/strong>
\nAs gossamer as taut<\/strong>
\nUtterly made up<\/strong>
\nLike guise and dolls<\/strong>
\nHoping to hold up<\/strong>
\nTo bright lights on disquieting duds<\/strong>
\nAs once alive audience<\/strong>
\nRecumbent in such getups<\/strong>
\nProne to rein checks<\/strong>
\nLess than charitably<\/strong>
\nIf over season<\/strong>
\nChoice words<\/strong>
\nEmployed too generously<\/strong>
\nMaking out like a bandit<\/strong>
\nAs if<\/strong>
\nAmateurs turn pro feign<\/strong>
\nStill putting on errs<\/strong>
\nIn a sense<\/strong>
\nBeyond approach<\/strong>
\nUnless crying<\/strong>
\nAuthor! Author!<\/strong>
\nThen too<\/strong>
\nTheir credit<\/strong>
\nSetting the stage<\/strong>
\nFor public scrutiny<\/strong>
\nAnd curtains<\/strong>
\nFor private dramas<\/strong>
\nTo play right<\/strong>
\nAnd becoming actors<\/strong>
\nAs some life long<\/strong>
\nVocation<\/strong>
\nWith every few weeks run<\/strong>
\nFrom the on set<\/strong>
\nFashioning a dress<\/strong>
\nRehearsal<\/strong>
\nImagining you’ve arrived<\/strong>
\nOpening night<\/strong>
\nWear all cheap talk<\/strong>
\nIs exchanged for some notorious scrip<\/strong>
\nTaking another’s word<\/strong>
\nAs one’s own is silenced<\/strong>
\nPropping up delicate worlds<\/strong>
\nThat can be destroyed<\/strong>
\nLike cellophane crumbling<\/strong>
\nA hard candy to swallow<\/strong>
\nOr cell profane<\/strong>
\nMaking a bard dandy too hollow<\/strong>
\nTo see stars circling and falling<\/strong>
\nUniformly emptying the stage<\/strong>
\nFor the row to follow<\/strong>
\nB4 you sunk my battle<\/strong>
\nShip ahoy<\/strong>
\nCan you hear me now?<\/strong>
\nUshering out<\/strong>
\nThe end of<\/strong>
\nA cacophonous patron<\/strong>
\nOf coarse, it could be<\/strong>
\nA night mare to be ridden<\/strong>
\nInto the next production<\/strong>
\nA play within a play<\/strong>
\nFull of mock puns<\/strong>
\nYielding false starts<\/strong>
\nAnd startling double-takes<\/strong>
\nAs hearts race<\/strong>
\nAnd our worst fears ketchup with us<\/strong>
\nDying on stage<\/strong>
\nPutting our best end forward<\/strong>
\nToo sad a claim<\/strong>
\nEnough to bring the house down<\/strong>
\nOr perhaps so fetching<\/strong>
\nFrom the edge of one’s seat<\/strong>
\nTo recover<\/strong>
\nAs unruly<\/strong>
\nAs the show must<\/strong>
\nGo on<\/strong>
\nIn her dialogue<\/strong>
\nNot with standing<\/strong>
\nOvations<\/strong>
\nOut laud<\/strong>
\nA cross the country side<\/strong>
\nOnly just surviving by assuming another’s name<\/strong>
\nA compelling ing\u00e9nue-ity<\/strong>
\nMaking up for every pre-tense<\/strong>
\nAs you take the stage<\/strong>
\nWith your commanding presents<\/strong>
\nThough petrified<\/strong>
\nMasking it well<\/strong>
\nWith a wink and a smile<\/strong>
\nYou totally rock<\/strong>
\nAnd given props<\/strong>
\nTaking flight<\/strong>
\nNot walking on water, but skipping<\/strong>
\nA stones throw from the coast<\/strong>
\nSafely in the pocket<\/strong>
\nLike music in your years<\/strong>
\nOne for the ages<\/strong>
\nAnd all for won<\/strong>
\nGiving berth<\/strong>
\nTo the generations<\/strong>
\nOf awe uplifting<\/strong>
\nAnd knaves razing<\/strong>
\nEver suspending disbelief<\/strong>
\nAs a play<\/strong>
\nLike a child<\/strong>
\nTakes a village<\/strong><\/p>\n

This poem is a gift and a tribute to my sweetheart and muse, Maryjo.\u00a0 She is an actress about to be in a Neil Simon play, Proposals<\/em>, put on by the Village Players<\/a>, here in Toledo.\u00a0 Her son, Connor, is also acting in this play.\u00a0 Maryjo has fulfilled many of my dreams, not the least of which is dating a beautiful actress!<\/p>\n
