Her voice could be heard<\/span>
\nThree generations within earshot<\/span>
\nYet the man in front of her<\/span>
\nWas two ears short of listening<\/span>
\nAt times she spoke<\/span>
\nSimply to convince herself<\/span>
\nThat she could<\/span>
\nDue more<\/span>
\nThen listen<\/span>
\nWading for something more than deaf<\/span>
\nAnd dumb ruse of men<\/span>
\nRelegated to quaint shams<\/span>
\nEngendering stupefactions<\/span>
\nAs a pathetic answer<\/span>
\nTo unquestioning order<\/span>
\nIn a guise whirled<\/span>
\nGent-ly herd<\/span>
\nIn tasteful reservations<\/span>
\nAnd if more than udder<\/span>
\nHe turns out<\/span>
\nTo be the outright shovin’ist<\/span>
\nIs it possible<\/span>
\nFor him to do without<\/span>
\nAs if<\/span>
\nYou list a strata<\/span>
\nAnd he’ll forevermore<\/span>
\nStill fancy himself<\/span>
\nOn top<\/span>
\nThe crowning member<\/span>
\nOf some exclusive club<\/span>
\nThe human race\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>
\nOft leaving<\/span>
\nRoom for only one abet<\/span>
\nTake it or leave it<\/span>
\nNever quite getting it<\/span>
\nWhat he wonts<\/span>
\nSo leading ladies<\/span>
\nShow him a role<\/span>
\nUn-for-gettable<\/span>
\nAnd when it comes to you<\/span>
\nIt will be<\/span>
\nAwe about<\/span>
\nThat transcending property<\/span>
\nYou’re choice<\/span><\/p>\n

Being heard is perhaps one of the most fundamental aspects of positive human experience.\u00a0 This poem addresses the profoundly prevalent and persistent reality that women are not listened to as much as men.\u00a0 The need for human connection is so strong that being ignored can be more harmful than active dislike.\u00a0 Being treated as an object rather than a subject is the primary mode of dehumanizing people.<\/p>\n

The male privilege present in most human cultures, often called sexism, may be the most important -ism in humans’ communal experience.\u00a0 Sexism may also be the most stubbornly persistent -ism.\u00a0 I think that this is true because women are interspersed in all human cultures.\u00a0 Many -isms, such as racism and classism, flourish because of in-group and out-group dynamics that can more easily be stratified in one’s everyday life and experience.\u00a0 However, since women are nearly omnipresent in households with more than one person, there would seem to be powerful forces integrating women in a relatively fair way into the most fundamental units of society, the family or household.\u00a0 A nearly universal factor in advancing equality for disenfranchised groups is to have that group exposed in meaningful ways to the dominant group.\u00a0 It seems that the theory is that exposure leads to understanding, compassion and justice.\u00a0 This doesn’t strike me as having much truth in regard to women.\u00a0 Boys grow up with the proverbial “hand that rocks the cradle,” subject to profound influence by their mothers.\u00a0 In the dominant heterosexual world, men seek and have close relations with women, as lovers, partners-spouses, raisers of children.\u00a0 Still, it seems that these interpersonal and family dynamics are trumped by larger social and cultural forces.\u00a0 I don’t pretend to have a solution for the ages old “war of the sexes” (which is typically framed in male fashion).\u00a0 Nonetheless, I am quite sure that men not listening to women is not only a profound insult to women, but a profound loss to men.\u00a0 Listen up guys!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
