Wolves in Elephants’ Clothing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Somewhat sheepishly<\/span>
\nShe whispered<\/span>
\nBeware of wolves in elephants’ clothing<\/span>
\nLurking about<\/span>
\nOnly looking<\/span>
\nLike they want<\/span>
\nTo kick some ass<\/span>
\nThough you can skulk in style<\/span>
\nIf you have<\/span>
\nA grand<\/span>
\nOld party<\/span>
\nSecuring your plush seat<\/span>
\nAt the table<\/span>
\nLoaded<\/span>
\nWith elephant guise<\/span>
\nRather incestual sycophants<\/span>
\nAt their I’m potentate parties<\/span>
\nAnd if you are well, off<\/span>
\nThey will take you<\/span>
\nTo a tee<\/span>
\nSpouting about<\/span>
\nKing George I and King George II<\/span>
\nAnd unjust taxes<\/span>
\nMore dear than all the tea in England<\/span>
\nAnd buy George, they’re not satisfied with a billion<\/span>
\nLet alone a third<\/span>
\nPerhaps some fresh prince all over<\/span>
\nA newly-minted crime scene<\/span>
\nUnseemly blind to any lackey of evolution<\/span>
\nYet there is no ruler<\/span>
\nTo measure their monkey business<\/span>
\nTheir trinity<\/span>
\nCheering with pomposity<\/span>
\nThrowing monologues on the fire<\/span>
\nAnd stalling<\/span>
\nHaving perfected the nationwide holdup<\/span>
\nA three wring circus<\/span>
\nAnd we are left<\/span>
\nWith what’s in the stall<\/span>
\nThe elephant dropping<\/span>
\nAll that is fertile<\/span>
\nFor phony fossils<\/span>
\nMaking evolution impossible<\/span>
\nA lessen they never forget<\/span>
\nWith a mellifluousness Abel<\/span>
\nTo capture the common man<\/span>
\nA cleanliness next to godlessness<\/span>
\nTheir hoods white<\/span>
\nFor shadowing their golden daze<\/span>
\nIn an urbane jungle<\/span>
\nLeaving behind poor gramma<\/span>
\nSpelling her downfall<\/span>
\nGOP opposed to GOD<\/span>
\nHaving fallen<\/span>
\nDown<\/span>
\nAnd can’t get up<\/span>
\nLeaving students<\/span>
\nWith nothing but a prayer<\/span>
\nLeaving workers<\/span>
\nWith a free market they can’t afford<\/span>
\nLeaving US<\/span>
\nWith life after death<\/span>
\nAnd perhaps before birth<\/span>
\nStill <\/span>
\nAll the wile between<\/span>
\nSent to our gloom<\/span>
\nTo be<\/span>
\nOr not to be<\/span>
\nBorne again<\/span>
\nThat is the quest in<\/span>
\nWhether it is know buller<\/span>
\nFor in the mine to suffer<\/span>
\nThe blings<\/span>
\nAnd ere rows<\/span>
\nOf outrageous fortunes<\/span>
\nOar to take alms<\/span>
\nAgainst a see of troubles<\/span>
\nAnd by opposing thumb end<\/span>
\nOvercoming any<\/span>
\nHitch<\/span>
\nHiking what’s left<\/span>
\nAs necessary<\/span>
\nSew much more than<\/span>
\nEvolution<\/span>
\nOne of the scarce things<\/span>
\nThey can’t seem to buy<\/span>
\nTheir con science<\/span>
\nOf what<\/span>
\nThey know longer nose<\/span>
\nInescapably figuring<\/span>
\nSomehow elect by birth<\/span>
\nPerpetual SNOBS<\/span>
\nWhere the N is usually silent<\/span>
\nIn their civil war<\/span>
\nInevitably impaled by their mortal compass<\/span>
\nSpinning north and south<\/span>
\nFeigning uprightness<\/span>
\nDisavowing any revolution present<\/span>
\nCaptivated by fanciful futures<\/span>
\nAnd realities passed<\/span>
\nAnd still<\/span>
\nWhat goes around<\/span>
\nComes around<\/span>
\nA choice truth<\/span>
\nEither buy<\/span>
\nBallads or bullets<\/span>
\nWe all have the write to choose<\/span>
\nTo ward off electioneer death<\/span><\/p>\n

This poem is a thinly veiled anti-Republican party exposition.\u00a0 Profoundly ironic, Republicans are as sure proof as you are going to find that evolution doesn’t exist, and, as Gandhi never said, “Be the lack of change you want to see in the world.”\u00a0 The Republican party appears quite comfortable with greed as the primary human motivation.\u00a0 Perhaps worse yet, and even more disingenuous, is the ease at which Republicans embrace anti-science views, of which anti-evolution and climate change skepticism are its hallmarks.\u00a0 For the so-called religious expertise that Republicans claim, they certainly manage to brand religion as anti-science, which it need not be.\u00a0 Even within the hallowed halls of religious territory, Republicans manage to bring hypocrisy to ever-new heights.\u00a0 With their specialty Christianity, Republicans paint a picture of Jesus as if he were a white, suburban-living, English-speaking American, preaching some prosperity gospel.\u00a0 For God’s sake, Jesus wasn’t even a Christian, he was a Jew, and a Palestinian Jew at that!\u00a0 If such a poor, dark-skinned, Middle-eastern, non-English-speaking, peace-loving, giver of free health care showed up in America, the Republicans would have reserved seating at his crucifixion.\u00a0 Of course, they would contract out the actual killing, though a carpenter driving in those nails would not likely be a member of the carpenters’ union.\u00a0 Plus, the Republicans definitely wouldn’t bother paying a “living” wage for such low skilled tasks, however unpleasant.<\/p>\n

The larger theme in this poem is about the tension between electoral and non-electoral politics.\u00a0 The two-party duopoly of Republocrats offers only a narrow range of possibilities deemed politically feasible.\u00a0 This leaves the electorate, barely even a majority of eligible voters in many elections, to ratify the predetermined candidates from a relatively narrow ideological pool.\u00a0 In my view, this electoral desert leaves little room for the kind of robust responses that the current world begs.\u00a0 Our slow and limited responses to climate change and energy use demonstrate this best.\u00a0 Even a well-managed end of civilization as we know it is a poor substitute for saving humanity.\u00a0 Of course, the “ballads or bullets” dichotomy is somewhat hyperbolic for effect.\u00a0 Nonetheless, without nonviolent revolution, or much-speeded evolution, our current body politic will experience a much more violent demise.\u00a0 I am rooting and working for a nonviolent revolution.\u00a0 The driving force of this revolution will almost certainly originate outside formal electoral politics. As history teaches us, such robust change does not come without personal sacrifice, and it demands courage.\u00a0 The Republicans would be well-advised to learn from Jesus, who showed us a different way.\u00a0 And who better than Jesus would know that just because you are a carpenter doesn’t mean that you have to see everything as a nail!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
