I have attended Toledo’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity celebration for many years.\u00a0 Today, I decided to pass on this year’s “show” (yes, the organizers used the term “show” to describe the festivities).\u00a0 In recent years, I have seen this ceremony devolve largely into a whitewashed view of Dr. King and his difficult, unpopular work.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, dead prophets are much more popular than living prophets.\u00a0 From these “shows” in recent years, you’d think that MLK was the leading purveyor of generic volunteerism, charity detached from justice, flying a banner of “why can’t we all just get along” rather than “put some skin in the game for justice.”\u00a0 These reinventions of Dr. King are dangerous since they transmute his hard fought battles and crucifixion by gunfire into a cheerleader for the status quo, the powers that be.\u00a0 The image that comes to my mind is the rich and powerful atop their fortress of money, status and power looking down upon the masses calling for smiling faces and “positive” attitudes in the face of their unjust privilege and recalcitrance.\u00a0 Instead, we should be calling out institutional classism and racism, perpetual wars (even the failed so-called war on poverty), wage slavery, income inequality, and reigning plutocracy.<\/p>\n

\"Freedom<\/p>\n

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed–Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2014, I am issuing a reprise of my epic MLK poem which I wrote two years:<\/p>\n

Owed to Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rekindle the story<\/span>
\nOf Martin Luther<\/span>
\nKing, Jr.<\/span>
\nAn unequaled story of two halves<\/span>
\nThose who halve<\/span>
\nAnd those who halve not<\/span>
\nAs far apart as North is from South<\/span>
\nA Protest-ant leading a Reformation<\/span>
\nTo not have a preyer<\/span>
\nWhat kind<\/span>
\nOf moral fiber<\/span>
\nIn a sea of White<\/span>
\nTo pick<\/span>
\nA fight<\/span>
\nBringing<\/span>
\nNot even<\/span>
\nA knife<\/span>
\nTo a gunfight<\/span>
\nAt the OKKK corral<\/span>
\nTaking a beating<\/span>
\nAll that they can give<\/span>
\nTo the man<\/span>
\nA hymn<\/span>
\nOf racial harmony<\/span>
\nEffacing off<\/span>
\nWith ballads<\/span>
\nAgainst the elect<\/span>
\nImpervious to ballots<\/span>
\nVotes cast<\/span>
\nBoth sides agree to only won thing<\/span>
\nNobody wants even one King<\/span>
\nLet alone a King, Jr.<\/span>
\nAnd resistance is feudal<\/span>
\nIncredible odds must be faced<\/span>
\nAt least<\/span>
\nHate to won<\/span>
\nHow to right a bout<\/span>
\nA fray sew<\/span>
\nEpic<\/span>
\nVerses<\/span>
\nGovernors, mayors, and sheriffs<\/span>
\nWee the people<\/span>
\nWile police do the bidding of property owners<\/span>
\nThat would be U.S. versus “them”<\/span>
\nNationwide there would be no holiday<\/span>
\nFor aegis to come<\/span>
\nWith their eye halve a dream speech<\/span>
\nPortending<\/span>
\nSomething between a White Christmas<\/span>
\nAnd some Valentines Day massacre<\/span>
\nLike anyone could be that cupid<\/span>
\nF\u00eated<\/span>
\nThat somebody will eat Jim Crow<\/span>
\nThe too haves<\/span>
\nCalled out<\/span>
\n“Be patient”<\/span>
\n“Change takes time”<\/span>
\nLike a sentry<\/span>
\nLong asleep at his post<\/span>
\nFor a bad check<\/span>
\n100 years overdue…<\/span><\/p>\n
