{"id":1290,"date":"2014-01-18T14:46:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T19:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=1290"},"modified":"2014-01-18T14:56:53","modified_gmt":"2014-01-18T19:56:53","slug":"poem-i-went-awol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/18\/poem-i-went-awol\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: I Went AWOL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One day<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">I went<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">AWOL<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>W<\/strong>ell<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>O<\/strong>rdered<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>L<\/strong>ife<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">I&#8217;m not sure<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">If anyone noticed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">If they did<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Judging me<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">By my backside<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">I would be too<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Looking forward<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mirrorly suggestive<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Of one&#8217;s self<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">In what might<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">A peer<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">A site to behold<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">But not<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Aiming for the moon<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">In lieu of stars<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Walking away from the dominant and dominating culture is an informal way of going AWOL, that is, the military acronym for Absent WithOut Leave.\u00a0 In this poem, the AWOL acronym stands for A Well Ordered Life.\u00a0 When you find yourself facing away from the dominant culture, you can expect that others will judge you by your backside.\u00a0 In traversing the road less traveled, the price the dominant culture extracts by any counter-cultural behaviors, is more than made up for by aligning oneself with the stars, rather than the moon, a lower site to set for brown-nosers and mere associates of all types.\u00a0 Much of modern life in Western civilization is built around group identities rather than passionate pioneering.\u00a0 We idolize celebrities.\u00a0 We cozy up to those with status and power.\u00a0 We our often possessed by our possessions, identifying more with what we own than with our own character.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite of traversing down the road less traveled is living vicariously through the lives of others.\u00a0 Perhaps one of the greatest illustrations of this is in the cinematic great <em>Cool Hand Luke<\/em>.\u00a0 I find this movie one of the most way existential movies ever.\u00a0 The main character, Luke, played by Paul Newman, quickly develops a reputation as a &#8220;cool handed&#8221; man hell-bent on finding his own way in his own way.\u00a0 Here I am referring to the &#8220;stop feeding off of me&#8221; scene, where Luke, broken down, pleads with his fellow inmates to stop pinning all of their hopes and dreams on him; in essence, saying &#8220;get a life of your own!&#8221;\u00a0 In this scene, Luke had escaped from the chain-gang for a second time, having been away for a while, stoking freely the fantasies of his fellow inmates left behind.\u00a0 Here is the script containing that scene from <a href=\"http:\/\/sfy.ru\/?script=cool_hand_luke_1967\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cool Hand Luke<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is Saturday afternoon. Carr is distributing mail and<br \/>\npackages, the men clustered around; others lying on bunks,<br \/>\nmaking wallets, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CARR<br \/>\nMagazines for you, Dragline!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">ANGLE ON DRAGLINE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dragline sits up from his bunk, astonished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nMagazines? Who&#8217;s sendin&#8217; me magazines?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He looks at the package. Carr has tossed on his bunk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nFrom mah uncle? Ah never heard from<br \/>\nhim in eight years and now he&#8217;s<br \/>\nsendin&#8217; me magazines. He musta gone<br \/>\ncrazy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He has torn open the package, looks through the magazines,<br \/>\nwhich are movie fan books, lies back to flip the pages. In<br \/>\nbackground. Carr is continuing the mail call. Suddenly Dragline&#8217;s<br \/>\neyes widen, his mouth opens, but he catches himself and closes<br \/>\nit before he has revealed himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">INSERT THE PICTURE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is taped to page in the magazine. It shows Luke in a suit<br \/>\nand tie, holding up four aces and a joker in one hand, arms<br \/>\naround two buxom over-made strippers. On the table in front<br \/>\nof them is a giant bottle of champagne and glasses. Scrawled<br \/>\nacross it is something in Luke&#8217;s writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">ANGLE DRAGLINE KOKO SOCIETY RED OTHERS<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Seeing Dragline&#8217;s reaction, they have gathered around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nLooka that! Two of them. Oh my&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nI&#8217;m dyin&#8217;. I&#8217;m dyin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dragline suddenly realizes the danger and closes the book so<br \/>\nCarr and the Wicker Man don&#8217;t catch on. The others reluctantly<br \/>\nmove away. Dragline casually hands the magazine to Society<br \/>\nRed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\n(whispering)<br \/>\nWhat&#8217;s the writing say?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED<br \/>\n(opening to the picture, reading)<br \/>\nDear Boys. Playing it cool. Wish you<br \/>\nwere here. Love, Cool Hand Luke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nOh my. Oh my&#8230; Give it back here!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Red surrenders the magazine. Dragline opens it again and a<br \/>\nlook of pure bliss settles over his face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nLemme see it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\n(violently)<br \/>\nGet away!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He looks over at Carr but Carr has moved away, is talking to<br \/>\nthe Wicker Man, his back to the men. Koko, Loudmouth Steve,<br \/>\nGambler and the others hurriedly cluster around Dragline.<br \/>\nTheir voices are eager intense whispers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nLookit the brunette&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BLIND DICK<br \/>\nThe blonde&#8217;s gotta better set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">GAMBLER<br \/>\nSome legs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LOUDMOUTH STEVE<br \/>\nThey must be six feet tall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TATTOO<br \/>\n&#8230;And the champagne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED<br \/>\n(from his bunk)<br \/>\nDomestic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TRAMP<br \/>\nWonder how he got the dough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">ALIBI<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s probably a salesman. You can<br \/>\nmake pretty good money if you know<br \/>\nwhat your doing in selling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">GAMBLER<br \/>\nA salesman! Cool Hand Luke a salesman?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BLIND DICK<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s probably a gigolo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MECHANIC<br \/>\nOr a con artist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LOUDMOUTH STEVE<br \/>\nThe head of the rackets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\n(reverently)<br \/>\nOh lookit that brunette.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nMah baby! We&#8217;re diggin&#8217; and dyin&#8217;<br \/>\nbut our boy Luke is lovin&#8217; and flyin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They all gaze at the picture with loving, dreamy, painful<br \/>\nrapture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">OMITTED<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">INT. BARRACKS (NIGHT)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Blackass time, dull, sad, boring. Koko sits idly flicking<br \/>\ncards from the poker deck, men staring into space. The cards<br \/>\nsail by Society Red who is clipping his nails.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED<br \/>\nStop that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nHow about you tryin&#8217; to make me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED<br \/>\nOh for&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They slowly subside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nDragline, lemme look at the picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\n(feigned innocence)<br \/>\nWhat for?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LOUDMOUTH STEVE<br \/>\nYeah, Drag. Get it out for a look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re just a kid. Whatta you know<br \/>\nabout it? You don&#8217;t wanna see that<br \/>\ndirty picture. Luke and those broads<br \/>\nan&#8217; all that booze.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nCome on, Drag. Lemme take a look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nIt&#8217;d go to your coconut head. You&#8217;d<br \/>\nstart getting ideas. Maybe even pass<br \/>\nright out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BLIND DICK<br \/>\nDragline! Be a buddy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nHow much you figure it&#8217;s worth, a<br \/>\npeek at this here picture? A quick<br \/>\nlook, I&#8217;m not talkin&#8217; about no<br \/>\nmemorizin&#8217; job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nA cold drink.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nA cold drink? You mean one cold drink?<br \/>\nTo feast yore starvin&#8217; fishy l&#8217;il<br \/>\neyes on The Picture? A true vision<br \/>\nof Paradise itself? With two of the<br \/>\nangels right there in plain sight a-<br \/>\nfriskin&#8217; round with mah boy?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nA cold drink? Okay?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nWell &#8212; okay. It&#8217;s a deal. One cold<br \/>\ndrink, if&#8217;n you please. In advance.<br \/>\nOne chilly bottle right here in mah<br \/>\nhot l&#8217;il hand&#8230; That goes for the<br \/>\nrest of you mullet-heads, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Activity as the men dig out coins to purchase drinks. Dragline<br \/>\npulls out the magazine and the men all gather round, gazing<br \/>\ninto it as though it were a crystal ball. Suddenly the wicker<br \/>\ndoor slams open and as the men look up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">THEIR P.O.V.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Luke is dumped to the floor, face down, unconscious, by Boss<br \/>\nPaul, Boss Kean, others. The Captain is standing there over<br \/>\nhim. Luke wears a new prison uniform and two sets of chains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CAPTAIN<br \/>\n(to Luke)<br \/>\nYou run one time, you got yourself a<br \/>\nset of chains. You run twice, you<br \/>\ngot two sets. You ain&#8217;t gonna need<br \/>\nno third set because you&#8217;re gonna<br \/>\nget your mind right&#8230; And I mean<br \/>\nright.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He looks at the men who are stunned by the juxtaposition of<br \/>\ntheir hero in The Picture and the reality of the unconscious<br \/>\nfigure before them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CAPTAIN<br \/>\nTake a good look at your Cool Hand<br \/>\nLuke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With his foot he prods Luke over onto his back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CLOSE ON LUKE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As he rolls over we can see he has been badly beaten.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">OMITTED<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">NEW ANGLE THE MEN<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As the Captain turns and walks out past the guards who follow,<br \/>\nand the wicket chute CLANGS shut, Dragline, Koko and others<br \/>\nmove forward and gently lift Luke onto the poker table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nOh mah poor baby. They done you real<br \/>\ngood&#8230; I don&#8217;t know if you gonna<br \/>\nhave them gals chasin&#8217; after you for<br \/>\na while&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CLOSE ON LUKE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">lying, eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve got some aspirin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nThey half killed him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">ALIBI&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nHe should have a doctor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t you never learn nuthin&#8217;? They<br \/>\nain&#8217;t gonna let no doctor see what<br \/>\nthey dont to him&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">ANGLE ON DRAGLINE, OTHERS<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dragline looks up at Carr who stands hovering above them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nCarr, kin we use your razor to clean<br \/>\nup where they cut his head?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Carr moves off to his canteen area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CLOSE ON LUKE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">as Blind Dick, Gambler, others move in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">GAMBLER<br \/>\nHow you feelin&#8217;, buddy?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TRAMP<br \/>\nHe don&#8217;t hear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TATTOO<br \/>\nSomebody get him something to drink.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SOCIETY RED<br \/>\nHere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Gently he tucks two aspirin tablets into Luke&#8217;s mouth, holds<br \/>\na cup of water to Luke&#8217;s mouth. Luke&#8217;s eyes slowly open, he<br \/>\ndrinks the water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s my baby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s gonna be awright.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">NEW ANGLE ON MEN<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">as Carr moves in with a razor, bandage, etc. The men clear<br \/>\nto give him room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nLuke?&#8230; We got the picture! See?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He holds it up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CLOSE ON LUKE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">His eyes squint open, close.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BLIND DICK&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nA pair of beauties. Best I ever seen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TATTOO&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nYou really know how to pick &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LOUDMOUTH STEVE&#8217;S VOICE<br \/>\nTell us about &#8217;em. What were they<br \/>\nlike?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CLOSE ON LUKE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">as his lips open. He speaks slowly, painfully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LUKE<br \/>\nPicture&#8217;s a phoney&#8230; Cost me a week&#8217;s<br \/>\npay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">NEW ANGLE THE MEN<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\nA phoney? Whatta you mean, a phoney?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">GAMBLER<br \/>\nWe saw the broads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BLIND DICK<br \/>\nYeah. Did you have them both at once<br \/>\nor &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LUKE<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a phoney. Made it up just for<br \/>\nyou guys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LOUDMOUTH STEVE<br \/>\nAw, come on. We saw it all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TATTOO<br \/>\nThe champagne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TRAMP<br \/>\nSome life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">FIXER<br \/>\nYou really had it made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LUKE<br \/>\nNothin. I had nothin, made nothin.<br \/>\nCouple towns, couple bosses. Laughed<br \/>\nout loud one day and got turned in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">KOKO<br \/>\n(about to cry)<br \/>\nBut &#8212; but &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">LUKE<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s all there was. Listen. Open<br \/>\nyour eyes. Stop beatin&#8217; it. And stop<br \/>\nfeedin&#8217; off me. Now get out of the<br \/>\nway. Give me some air.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Stunned, the men shrink back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">DRAGLINE<br \/>\nHe ain&#8217;t himself. He&#8217;s all beat up.<br \/>\nCain&#8217;t you see that?
