{"id":1154,"date":"2013-10-24T12:33:47","date_gmt":"2013-10-24T17:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=1154"},"modified":"2013-10-24T12:33:47","modified_gmt":"2013-10-24T17:33:47","slug":"poem-ounce-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/24\/poem-ounce-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Ounce of Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">An ounce of prevention<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Is worth a pound of cure<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Unfortunately, stuff is sold<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">By the pound and dollar<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Virtually everyone knows that prevention is preferable to cure.\u00a0 As Ben Franklin put it, &#8220;A stitch in time saves nine.&#8221;\u00a0 Much of prevention takes relatively little knowledge but a good dose of long-term thinking and patience\/persistence.\u00a0 So why is prevention often poorly practiced?\u00a0 First, as this short poem says, &#8220;stuff is sold,&#8221; meaning that tangible goods and more-easily defined services are easier to sell than intangible goods and complex, difficult-to-define services.\u00a0 For example, in health-related fields, it is easier to sell a pill or distinct procedure than a whole lifestyle that offers healthy eating, regular physical activity, lower stress and adequate sleep.\u00a0 Such healthy lifestyles are not achievable with a small number of simple, easy-to-define products or services.\u00a0 Moreover, overall, the desire in Western civilization to monetize everything possible plays into our more base instincts that favor the concrete, the simple, and the immediate.\u00a0 This profoundly affects what we make and do in our careers.\u00a0 Those vocations which may advance human progress but are not easily monetized are at-risk for atrophying in modern, capitalistic culture.\u00a0 Human creativity is relegated to a too-narrow focus to come up with solutions adequate for our problems.\u00a0 We end up focusing on solutions that create as many or more problems.\u00a0 If Western civilization where a pharmaceutical cure being advertised, the list of side-effects would literally take us to our death beds!\u00a0 If we cannot together create a culture where the organizing principle is more than buying and selling, then our lives will continue to be bought and sold to the highest bidder, down to the last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enotes.com\/shakespeare-quotes\/pound-flesh\" target=\"_blank\">pound of flesh<\/a>.\u00a0 May we live our lives in such a way that we treasure and guard our ounces of prevention as it reigns pounds of easy cures and silver bullets; and may the fruit of our labor enrich us all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An ounce of prevention Is worth a pound of cure Unfortunately, stuff is sold By the pound and dollar Virtually everyone knows that prevention is preferable to cure.\u00a0 As Ben Franklin put it, &#8220;A stitch in time saves nine.&#8221;\u00a0 Much &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/24\/poem-ounce-prevention\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,15],"tags":[386,516,385,220,359,625,486,548,420,387,658,94,468,585,260,53,394,529,85],"class_list":["post-1154","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-poems","category-political-and-philosophical-musings","tag-creativity","tag-culture","tag-death","tag-labor","tag-life","tag-lifestyle","tag-meaning","tag-modern","tag-monetize","tag-patience","tag-poems","tag-poetry","tag-prevention","tag-progress","tag-risk","tag-short-poems","tag-sleep","tag-time","tag-western-civilization"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>POEM: Ounce of Prevention | Poems, Political and Philosophical Musings | Top Pun&#039;s Poetry, Funny Puns, Free Posters, Public Health Radio Show!
