{"id":1101,"date":"2013-10-01T12:15:36","date_gmt":"2013-10-01T17:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2015-09-21T09:38:59","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T14:38:59","slug":"poem-a-lousy-take-on-lao-tse-tao-te-ching-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/01\/poem-a-lousy-take-on-lao-tse-tao-te-ching-38\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: A Lousy Take on Lao-Tse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">A Lousy Take on Lao-Tse (Tao Te Ching 38)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">When Tao is lost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">There is virtue<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">When virtue is lost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">There is morality<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">When morality is lost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">There is propriety<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Yet oddly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Even when<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Awe is lost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Tao remains<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">The eternal rest<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Giving rise to awe<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Tao Te Ching is the ancient Chinese sacred text of Taoism.\u00a0 The authorship is attributed to Lao-Tse, which may have been an individual or a group.\u00a0 There are many English translations of the Tao Te Ching, which seem to differ greatly.\u00a0 The above poem is my take on chapter 38, which seems to have stuck in my mind.\u00a0 I was struck by the truth of the progression, or deterioration, from the ineffable unity of Tao to virtue, then morality, then propriety, which is the beginning of chaos, with propriety being the shallowest foundation for life.\u00a0 While the Tao Te Ching is necessarily perplexing, &#8220;the Tao that can be described is not the Tao,&#8221; this foundation which escapes our grasp is the very foundation which secures our hope.\u00a0 No machinations, cruelty, nor any power on earth can overturn it or control it.\u00a0 This irreducible hope persists as an untouchable in a world bent on holding and controlling way more than called for.\u00a0 This irreducible hope gives rise to awe!<\/p>\n<p>The Tao Te Ching is more of a comprehensive series of hints than a textbook.\u00a0 I view it as an essential companion for any mystic.
