Taken In<\/strong><\/h1>\n

What powerful minds<\/span>
\nCan wrap themselves around<\/span>
\nPails in comparison<\/span>
\nTo the sea of mysteries<\/span>
\nTaken in<\/span>
\nBy an open heart<\/span>
\nKeys to a door unlocked<\/span>
\nIncite weighting<\/span>
\nA mountain of presents<\/span>
\nCountless<\/span>
\nUn-rapt<\/span>
\nBy lesser mines<\/span>
\nFuels goaled<\/span>
\nLead buy ail chemistry<\/span>
\nLiving on bread crumbs<\/span>
\nSour grapes<\/span>
\nAnd ancient plumbs<\/span>
\nWhich might<\/span>
\nMake rite<\/span>
\nMiss taking<\/span>
\nFor old prunes<\/span>
\nSpurring nature’s calling<\/span>
\nTurning awe<\/span>
\nInto mere droppings<\/span>
\nWhat more fertilize see<\/span>
\nBeyond star dust<\/span>
\nBig bangs<\/span>
\nAnd clever hides<\/span>
\nSphering only<\/span>
\nThat wee are food again<\/span>
\nFor the gods<\/span>
\nFlailing to clutch<\/span>
\nTheir pursed ellipse<\/span>
\nUnquipped beyond their gears<\/span>
\nAnd graveyard shifts<\/span>
\nFrom wents the flowers come and go<\/span>
\nAnd to the see returning<\/span>
\nFrom a where<\/span>
\nThe eternal calling<\/span>
\nWith endless drops<\/span>
\nEchoes beyond mine<\/span>
\nLet it go<\/span>
\nAnd be<\/span>
\nTaken in<\/span>
\nBy an open heart<\/span><\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, the title of this poem, “Taken In,” is a pun. \u00a0“Taken in” can mean being fooled or conned, indicating gullibility; or, it can mean invited in or accepted into. \u00a0An open heart is vastly larger than even an open mind. \u00a0The heart is the only organ of perception that can take in the whole of life. \u00a0Even the most powerful minds are constrained by the mind’s own faculty of dividing and analyzing; and while the mind can synthesize, it is limited by the parts available to it, unable to access the whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. \u00a0The mountains of presents that life offers stretch far beyond our minds reach. \u00a0Only by opening our hearts can we be taken in by the whole of life and take our rightful place and role. \u00a0I see the heart as naturally open, our default condition. \u00a0Nevertheless, through conditioning of hurt, fear, and uncertainty, we may learn to close our hearts. \u00a0I particularly like the image of “keys to a door unlocked.” \u00a0The fact that the door is open and unlocked must sit with the intrigue of the door having a lock and you possessing a key, not to open the door which is already open, but to lock it. \u00a0This “incites weighting,” trying to lock up parts of life for our own. \u00a0Unfortunately, however much we are able to lock up for our own, we will end up with less than if we kept the door of the heart open. \u00a0Clever minds may on occasion get the upper hand on those with open hearts, but cleverness is no substitute for wisdom. \u00a0Cleverness adeptly grasps and manipulates for its own purposes. \u00a0Wisdom lets go, and is taken in by a high power, better aligning oneself with higher purposes. \u00a0May you be taken in…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
