{"id":1077,"date":"2013-09-23T11:25:25","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T16:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/?p=1077"},"modified":"2013-09-23T11:29:21","modified_gmt":"2013-09-23T16:29:21","slug":"poem-navy-yard-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/23\/poem-navy-yard-killings\/","title":{"rendered":"POEM: Navy Yard Killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Navy Yard Killings<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In these crazy times<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Of senseless killings<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Nations seek a return<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">To sensible killings<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are many levels of crazy. \u00a0There are perhaps even more levels of crazy when it comes to killing. \u00a0I am not surprised at all that mass killings by &#8220;crazy&#8221; shooters rip the heart out of a nation and its citizenry. \u00a0I am more surprised that killings as part of an industry, a solemnly premeditated projection of military power unparalleled in human history, are accepted as routine, &#8220;business as usual.&#8221; \u00a0Even as these crazy shootings rip our hearts out, as a nation we seem stuck in a place where such crazy killings seem to be a new normal. \u00a0The most recent mass killings happening at a Navy shipyard juxtapose these two seemingly separate realities with some irony. \u00a0Is the convergence of accepting as a new normal, as unavoidable, crazy mass killings within our borders in &#8220;civilian&#8221; settings somehow related to our longstanding societal acceptance of war and other &#8220;extrajudicial&#8221; killings. \u00a0I suspect that they may be. \u00a0Nevertheless, I hope that our experiences as victims of violence helps us develop compassion and empathy for those routinized military situations where we are the perpetrators of violence. \u00a0President Obama, in the memorial service for the twelve people murdered at the navy shipyard, quoted the ancient Greek poet,\u00a0Aeschylus:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Even in our sleep,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>pain which cannot forget<\/em><br \/>\n<em>falls drop by drop upon the heart until\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em>in our despair,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>against our will,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>May we gain a wisdom through our awful losses, a wisdom that transcends violence. \u00a0As the dead continue to speak to us, through our grief, let God&#8217;s awful grace remind us that every one of us is loved &#8212; by family, friends, neighbors, God &#8212; regardless of our status as victim and\/or perpetrator. \u00a0And may this unconditional love, the awful grace of God, reigning on the just and the unjust, transform us into a peaceful people, at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>I dream of the day when the violence of war will be as unacceptable as slavery\/human trafficking. \u00a0Only when nations lay aside their weapons will the peace where one side fits all become a reality. \u00a0God&#8217;s awful grace demands it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Navy Yard Killings In these crazy times Of senseless killings Nations seek a return To sensible killings There are many levels of crazy. \u00a0There are perhaps even more levels of crazy when it comes to killing. \u00a0I am not surprised &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/toppun.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/23\/poem-navy-yard-killings\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[101,174,57,9,15],"tags":[103,542,512,339,427,538,399,589,65,263,431,559,388,267,273,187,528,132,71,188,658,291,110,530,616,601,53,521,394,406,163,203,389],"class_list":["post-1077","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-anti-war","category-news","category-peace","category-poems","category-political-and-philosophical-musings","tag-acceptance","tag-ancient","tag-business","tag-compassion","tag-crazy","tag-dream","tag-empathy","tag-family","tag-god","tag-grace","tag-heart","tag-history","tag-hope","tag-irony","tag-love","tag-military","tag-navy","tag-normal","tag-obama","tag-pacifism","tag-poems","tag-poet","tag-power","tag-president","tag-projection","tag-reality","tag-short-poems","tag-slavery","tag-sleep","tag-status","tag-violence","tag-war","tag-wisdom"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>POEM: Navy Yard Killings | Anti-War, News, Peace, Poems, Political and Philosophical Musings | Top Pun&#039;s Poetry, Funny Puns, Free Posters, Public Health Radio Show!
