This design goes out to all those Occupy Wall Street protesters everywhere! I like this cool design because of the obvious incongruity of juxtaposing supporting the police and beating oneself up. While the police are part of the 99%, they are also tools for the 1% to enforce, typically selectively enforce, laws that will protect the power of the 1%. Dealing with nonviolent protesters is not something for which the police are typically well-trained. Police routinely rely on militaristic methods for crowd control and social control. Police brutality and abuse is a natural outgrowth of this approach. Presumptively having the law on their side, as the enforcers of laws, police can shield themselves from accountability and overreact to peaceful demonstrators. Fortunately, one of the purposes of nonviolent demonstrators is to expose the inherent violence in the system, and the front lines of this is often law enforcement and the military. Of course, when police overreact and use violence to quell peaceful demonstrations, denial of doing anything wrong, a refusal to be accountable for one’s actions is typically the first response. This only highlights the gap between the immense responsibility that police have to behave well and the reality that the socially sanctioned possessors of violence can get away with violence much easier. Suggesting that a protester beat themselves up preemptively is a way to highlight the farcical notion of the purity of law enforcement and violence to control other people. Rather than law enforcement officers receiving harsher punishments for “unnecessary” violence, it is rare to see police prosecuted successfully for such misbehavior. Maybe we should expect that such misbehaving police should regulate themselves, and that they should beat themselves up!

Jesus Wishes Happy Mother’s Day

Comedian Jesus, like the rest of us, has a mom. Of course, Jesus, being perfect, would never forget to wish his mother a happy Mother’s Day. However, Jesus has an advantage of being a perfect child. Not everybody has a great relationship with their mother. Nonetheless, Jesus is a patient and understanding son, indulging his mother’s occasional insecurities or whining. Still, this is no great accomplishment for the Son of God. The greater difficulty comes in exactly how to celebrate Father’s Day; having two daddies can present some complications. We’ll just have to see how comedian Jesus deals with that!

Yesterday, as the closing ceremony of Occupy Toledo’s May Day Fest, between two and 2,000 people gathered to tear down “The Wall,” symbolizing corporate mis-rule and oppression. This wall was cut to shreds to symbolize freeing ourselves from corporate rule.The inanimate corporate logos, appropriately symbolizing the incorporeal non-persons that are American corporations, didn’t stand a chance against the real live human persons wielding the cutting edge of direct democracy.The shell game of avoiding accountability comes to an end as the shell of a corporation, “Shell,” (pictured below) is shell-shocked in one shell of a show.In the end, all of the corporate papers are invoked, provoked and revoked.Looks like this round goes to the human persons! Corporate non-persons beware!

Doctor Jesus Goes on Rounds

Dr. Jesus, a teacher as well, works at a teaching hospital. Dr. Jesus takes every opportunity possible to share his love of medicine with others. Of course, working at a prestigious teaching hospital doesn’t come cheap! So, Dr. Jesus first asks his followers to join him in and a round of the hymn, “Blessed Insurance.” Dr. Jesus knows who puts hummus on his pita bread! Also, it proved to be eminently more practical than Dr. Jesus’ original health care plan, “Health Care for Awe.” Even with Dr. Jesus’ new-found practicality, he still remains suspect for his whole “health care for a song” business.

So, until next Sunday, with the next edition of Doctor Jesus, CEO Jesus, Comedian Jesus, General Jesus, Country Club Jesus, etc., let me know what you think.

POEM: Personal Boundaries

Sometimes I have trouble telling where I end and you begin
No, wait, that’s you!

This funny little poem plays with the confusion inherent in having fuzzy personal boundaries. Codependency is a very popular topic these days. Sorting out what is your own business versus what is somebody else’s business can be a very difficult task. Fortunately, we live in the world of interdependence. So, I suppose that sorting out oneself from others would naturally present some difficulty. I cannot claim any great wisdom in regards to that fuzzy line between what is one’s own business and what is somebody else’s business. However, I think I’ve stumbled upon a fairly good cheat. If I focus on who I am and who I want to be, this seems to be a full-time job, leaving little time for messing around with other people’s business. Self-awareness and self-discovery is a lot of work. However, if we were able to achieve a decent level of self-awareness, then what do we bring into our relationships with other people becomes much clearer. Of course, it also helps a lot, if the other people that we are in relationship with know who they are and who they want to be as well. In the end, this probably boils down to the simple reality that minding other people’s business is just a roundabout way of avoiding dealing with what is truly our own business. Somehow, it seems so much more fun and/or easier to diagnose and fix other people’s problems! Unfortunately, I am the only one that can truly take care of my business, and if I don’t do it, then I can’t blame anybody else. Of course, if I just stick to blaming everybody else, I don’t have to deal with my own stuff. Is this just me, or is that you?!

Kent State Massacre POEM

Today is the 42nd anniversary of the Kent State Massacre, where four students were killed and nine students were injured when National Guard troops opened fire on anti-war demonstrators. Below is a picture of Arlington Midwest at Kent State, May 4, 2006. Arlington Midwest is a display of the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition which organizes traveling displays of tombstones representing the human cost of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The display includes a simulated tombstone with name, rank, age and state of origin for each fallen U.S. soldier.

Below is a poem reflecting on the Kent State Massacre, by Terry Lodge, a member of the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition, activist lawyer, Toledo’s People’s Attorney, and usual suspect:

Looking down from the black marble memorial
Grave reminder
Of a dark chapter
A nonfiction nightmare
Played out in an Ohio theater of war
I’m halfway between Blanket Hill and the valley of death of May 4, 1970
An observation post above a field of green
Today dressed up as thousands of war crimes.

It is May
And the semi-shade of the black oak branches
And their celadon new leaves
Wreath the distant, orderly rows
Of white spring petals
Fallen from the Tree of Life.

Tears water this chiaroscuro of whitewash, nestled
In the shadows where crimes against humanity are plotted.
From a distance, it’s a palette worthy of Manet,
Choreographed by Rumsfeld.

These petals will produce no fruit
Nor beauty or poetry
Their leaves are pages of the guest registers
Of three thousand funeral homes.

Silently we listen
For some hopeful spring noise
That their blood might have nurtured,
Answered by silence.

DTE Shareholder Protest

Between 200 and 200,000 protesters gathered outside the DTE Energy headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. This DTE Energy protest (see TV news coverage) was visited upon by two to 2,000 Occupy Toledo protesters. One unidentified protester, with a striking resemblance to Homer Simpson, wearing a notorious rainbow colored peace hand designed by Top Pun, showed his anti-nuke colors.Another Occupy Toledo protester was less well disguised. Michael Leonardi, pictured below, to the left, of course, can be seen waving his Occupy Toledo colors and anti-nuclear banner. Mr. Leonardi received some criticism from other protesters for leading the way, since the more numerous yet bland protesters may have missed their photo op. Mr. Leonardi bore this burden of leadership well and led despite his numerous followers.As Mr. Leonardi and the other alleged participant, a.k.a. Top Pun, came to this protest they made the obvious mistake of parking in the casino parking garage. The collusion of the purveyors of our casino economy had rolled out the concrete carpet that was a largely empty casino parking garage. This free parking was apparently not to be had by mere commoners or the general public. When we were spotted walking out of the parking garage with our fluorescent yellow Occupy Toledo signs and in our radiation suits, the very astute security recognized that maybe we weren’t there to gamble away our hard earned dollars. This special DTE Energy shareholder security made it clear that we were not welcome and told us that if we didn’t move the car that they would tow it. They were even kind enough to follow us out (pictured below) to make sure that no empty parking spots were harmed in the making of this fiasco. Hear, hear, the last thing any anti-nuclear protesters want to do is have anybody take any unwarranted risks, like, say, storing 550 tons of nuclear waste in a five-story building that can’t be offloaded as built without knocking the building over.

This evening, between 30 and 30,000 people gathered at Levis Square in downtown Toledo for Occupy Toledo‘s May Day Fest event, Main Street vs. Wall Street – MAIN STREET SPEAKS OUT!Greg Coleridge, pictured below, spoke about corporate personhood and money as free speech, and the Move to Amend movement.Dr. Johnathan Ross, “Toledo’s Doctor,” pictured below,spoke about universal healthcare and the need to achieve health with a capital H.With the threat of rain, Occupy Toledo movement party to Third Space, and heard from several more speakers, including Michael Leonardi, Joe DeMare (pictured below), and Greg Lyons.We ordered pizzas and listened to some great speakers. A good time was had by all.

POEM: Running Like Chickens With Their Heads Cut Off

Have you ever looked a chicken in the eyes?
Most of us city folk probably never have
Where are you?
Chickens can look quite different in the city
Just the same
Their bodies run around
Like death will catch up with them if they slow down
Their heads flit about
Ensnared by nothing at all
Abiding mirror fax of life
Who has got one’s back?
Missing only you, won’s greatest faux
Possessed by a vacancy
That will soon enough be dismissed
Wading for something more
Unable to see what’s beneath their own feat
Where we are grounded
Still, six feet is better than two
When it’s not yours!
As if one May fly!
To live but for one day
Today
Even four proves oddly better
Fore what can thou dust do, in turn?
Don’t you see?!
Chickens re-member!?
They are almost everywhere
Though they are practically invisible where I live
So I am bound to run into more than a few
Even more so if you cross to the other side
Just, please, don’t bother asking me why
I must
Have chickens
Incite me
To a whirl
Without
Chickens
Running about
With their heads
Just being
Cut off
Like trafficking enflesh

I wrote this poem a while back, but thought that it might be a good poem for the month of May, given the reference to the short-lived May fly. Nonetheless, this poem fits on a long-standing theme, particularly for those living in Western civilization, of busyness and not being present in the moment. Like many of my poems, you may have to read it several times, because it involves a lot of puns and multiple meanings depending on how you read various phrases. It’s difficult for me to comment on longer poems, because I end up commenting way, way longer than the poem itself. Sometimes I like to leave the poems to speak for themselves. Still, I think it’s probably comment on one strain in this poem. The phrase: Still, six feet is better than two is a reference to being buried 6 feet underground and a reference to a chicken with its head cut off lying on the ground looking at the 6 feet of three other chickens and taking some small comfort that it is not their two feet that they see in their last moment of life. Also, this is an allusion to the apparent ease at which we will trade other people’s lives for our own. If you find this somewhat morbid, then take some comfort in the line: Even four proves oddly better. In our fixation on the quantitative in our culture, it might seem odd that four is actually better than six. However, the four refers to two sets of feet and a pair of chickens or people. This refers to the comfort that we find in companionship with one another. This value of companionship strikes a sharp contrast to the hurried busyness that tramples our presence of any given moment, and rushes by authentic relationships with others. In this crazy world, which may seem dangerous and short at times, especially if you are chicken, companionship and solidarity may prove to be the reason or purpose in our lives. I guess the message is: pay attention to the people around you. Oh yeah, you may want to pay attention to the chickens around you as well.
