Why does Top Pun care about public health?
While I specialize in peace and social justice designs and products, I have a special passion for public health and it's embrace of social justice as it's philosophy. I am formally trained in public health at the University of Michigan School of Public Health (M.P.H. Human Nutrition '85).
In order to devote my full attention to TopPun.com, I quit my formal public
health job-career on April 8, 2004. I had worked as a health planner,
AIDS program director, public health nutritionist, and health educator.
I am a long-time member and supporter of the American Public Health
Association. I have also had the honor of serving in my state
affiliate, the Ohio Public Health Association (as a past president,
governing councilor, public policy committee chair, membership committee
chair, etc.). I hope that what work I do here can contribute to the
advancement of the public health.
As a bona fide "bleeding heart liberal," I
create this public health design (to the left, of course) to commemorate my
joining the ranks of the uninsured on May 1, 2004 (May Day!). I have
spent many years advocating for health care rights. Of course, these
many years I had had some of the best health insurance in the world.
Now, I have joined the majority of my fellow human beings on this planet who
have greatly limited access to health care. While being uninsured is
not my first preference, I have found this situation a great builder of
solidarity with my planetary citizens. As expressed in the great song,
Guantanamera, I would rather share my lot with the poor than the rich.
